Have you looked at autodesk's Maya LT for indie game devs. Steam has the monthly at $30 , not sure about direct from autodesk - but it include there own Stingray game engine with some big middle-ware and I think motion builder might be in it all(Not sure about the last).
Also from Steam I'm curious about Substance Painter 2 for paint right on the model -> but price is a bit high. Try finding trails of all you'd like to test, I know autodesk does 30 trails.

There are newer cloud based services like Mixamo https://www.mixamo.com/ and AutoDesk Character Generator https://charactergenerator.autodesk.com/ . Which are pay services. But like post here Mixamo is run some kind of special .
- A recent UE4 poll on the subject https://forums.unrealengine.com/showthre...-Light-Wave-Etc

- Modo package with painter tool and on a subscription base like may LT but cheaper ( minus a real full current gen game engine ^- Stringray) http://store.steampowered.com/app/401090/

-- Old wares habit form the very early 2000's left me force to learn and only feel good using 3ds max. But it's not a good deal at the indie level, and I am just able to use the education license for most AutoDesk. LOL- They kind of turn the P2P thing around on my, I'm trained now to only be quick and good with their top price package...lol
