probably they missed investing more into the engine development when it was popular enough and could allow it, or attract investors to make the company bigger, and later they could not do it when less income came from 3dgs, thus had to work on other projects.
especially when unity3d appeared. I personally selected 3dgs over unity3d when A7 was around A7.81 because it was and is still better for my purposes, and A7 commercial seemed to be more achievable that unity3d pro as a hobbyist.
the new WED (announced 3 years ago) could be a great escape, but it was stopped one and a half year ago, similarly to Android support.
and today you have many more attracting choices if a game engine is needed.
