NT was a separate development branch, like 2k.

Technically Windows XP is the follower of Windows 2k (= NT 5.0), but for the private end user it was sold as follower of Windows ME.

DOS based:
Windows 1.0
Windows 2.x
Windows 3.0
Windows 3.1
Windows 95
Windows 98
Windows Me
(Follower: XP, not DOS based anymore)

New Technology:
(at first targeted enterprise use only)
Windows NT 3.1
Windows NT 3.5
Windows NT 3.51
Windows NT 4.0
Windows 2000
(from here on, also for private users, finally with PnP)
Windows XP
Windows Server 2003
Windows XP Prof. x64
Windows Vista
Windows Server 2008
Windows 7
Windows Server 2008 R2
Windows 8
Windows Phone 8
Windows RT
Windows Server 2012
Windows 10

Taking away the server, tablet and phone editions, the picture is not all that wrong anymore (seeing fromprivate user's perspective) tongue

Windows 1.0
Windows 2.x
Windows 3.0

Windows 3.1
Windows 95
Windows 98
Windows Me
Windows XP / Windows XP Prof. x64
Windows Vista
Windows 7
