I'm getting the error "can't write *.$$W" when trying to build the level after adding a folder with 64 .dds and .tga textures in the wad texture manager. I had added previously another folder with 50 dds and tga files with no issues but I get that error when adding the other one. Any idea what could be going on?

Thanks in advance

Very -none helpful error - We are become experts in figuring these out lol..

WED error codes unhelpful... http://www.conitec.net/beta/editorerrors.htm

*.$$W is a backup of the .wed file...

I am able to safely delete it and the .wed file and then double-click the .wmp file to open the map in WED. ** I can't be sure you can

But that may be a fix... Also naming or and file location are the other things that come to mind...

I tried to remove wed and $$w but no luck. When I try to build I get the error again. I will try to create a wad file with the textures instead of using a folder and see if that works.

I'm attempting to repeat your error... 2 ideas come to mind...
1- maybe you can only use one folder.
2- permissions - as in folder 2 is located in a area that WED can access.

---- I failed to repeat the error.
Both thought 1 and 2 are wrong. I could use more then 1 folder.. And I could add a source folder from the "Windows" folder (scary !!)

This leaves me wondering if similar or repeated file names are a issue.Or File name length.

Try starting WED as admin.
Or move that folder somewhere, where WED can have access to it.
This once happened to me, because WED had no permission to write to that folder.

tried running as admin but no luck. I've noticed that the issue happens when adding the .tga files (which are the normal maps of the .dds textures). Without them it works fine. I tried to put them as png instead of tga but i get the same error. Not sure if it could be related to having a limit of number of textures that wed can handle.

I've created a new, empty level and I have been able to add the texture folder without any issues. So maybe WED/Map compiler doesn't like having mutiple folders with lots of textures.

EDIT: tried to mix both texture folders putting all textures in one folder but still get the same issue, so maybe there is a limit of number of textures it can handle.

Looks like WED doesn't like having too much textures: I've built two wads for the textures I had in the two folders and I can add one without any issue. However, when I try to load the second wad it gives me the error "No to all"
