Yet a few more additions. Inkscape, Paint.NET, UVMapper, Molebox, SubtitlesK5ky, Tattoo, AC3D, MarbleCLAY. The Dogwaffle link now points to the free version page instead of the commercial version. Moved a few things around and clarified some descriptions, renamed the thread. My edit time has now expired, so no more changes unless something really cool pops up and is appropriate for it.
I also added a small handful of these to the freetools section of the Wiki.

I think the most important marketing tool starving indies can have is a good web site so perhaps you can include the better free opensource CMS and ecommerce solutions. We are using tikiwiki, http://www.tikiwiki.org, and oscommerce, http://www.oscommerce.org. Using a content-management system frees developers from spending too much time updating and implementing their website architecture so there is more time to put up content

Pardon me, but I forgot to look who moderates General Tools before I point this thread to here and since I can't moderate this forum, I can't stick this thread to the top. In the old forum software, there used to have a "Moderated By:" at the top but now it's at the bottom.

DivX is not really free. You have to pay for the encoder and it is not free to give the codec away in a commercial project. I can't find the figures, but there is a link to request more license info for commercial users. DivX for PC Games Brochure -- slacer

This is a nice list! But I think the ultimate's unwrap3d site is invalid, or moved.. I keep getting the normal page not found error... But here's a nice tutor ; web page in case the site's up again... Cheers

It's still active. Maybe they had server trouble when you tried.
To anyone who plans on using Divx, be sure to take note of its license restrictions. You can use it for free for personal use or for indie filmmaking purposes, but if you want to use it in a commercial work to encode ingame cutscenes or even trailers/video demos for public viewing, then it looks like a fee is involved. Don't forget to include an installer to place the codec on the user's machine if you go with it. I wonder if they have a free usage policy for indie game development?
Don't forget to double check any freeware or open source software you use to make sure it is all right to use in commercial products.
@MOD: Please remove the "..free" part on the Divx line. Also, after Motek Entertainment, please add the follow. Please, be sure to include the URL tags:
TikiWiki - free
osCommerce - open source online shop e-commerce software...free
Finally, if it's all right with Conitec, perhaps making this a sticky thread would be beneficial for newcomers or as a quick reference to others.

Note, however, there may not be many programs that are free.

Vue 4 is a powerful 3D application optimized for the creation, rendering and animation of natural scenery. It's unbeatable at 3D scenery, and it's great for other forms of art too!
Vue 4 was designed for beginners as well as advanced users. It has been granted many awards for its amazing render quality and incredible ease of use.
"In terms of sheer visual beauty, absolutely nothing beats Vue d'Esprit!" raved Computer Arts in its January 2000 review of Vue 3. Version 4 simply does it even better!
Vue 4 is the ideal choice for the artist - hobbyist or professional - in search of quality 3D scenery.
I love that program and was pleasently surprised to see this offer: Vue'D Esprit

There are several magazine that deserve to be here. One is http://www.digitmag.co.uk/another is http://www.computerarts.co.ukI check them out at the magazine store from time to time to see what free software they have (usually previous version stuff) -probably should subscribe. To give you an idea the magazine is about $12-$14 by me and I got Carrara Studio free and at the time was able to get the full version for about $79 instead of $450+. I also got a copy of Credo's LifeForms 3.5 for free and I can now get an upgrade for $89 instead of $400 for full product. I have also gotten older version of Poser, Vue and free textures, models and sound files from several of these mags. Forget the name of the others but think they may have been http://www.futurenet.co.uk publications.

The best audio convertor out there is dbpoweramp. It's free, and there's an OGG plugin(and many others) available in their Codec Central. It has a swell little UI and is easy to work with. There's also a PowerPak that costs $14. There's a 30-day demo for it and you can only use the LAME MP3 feature during that time or after registering. http://www.dbpoweramp.com/If you're going to be needing something to rip temp/royalty free audio tracks for your game then the only thing you should be using is Exact Audio Copy. http://www.exactaudiocopy.org/

I didn't compile this list, but I thought it would be a handy one for the guide. These are services that allow you to upload large files to email addresses. Of course, you can point it to your own address and provide the link for other to download from. Useful for large resource and demo dispersement. Quote:
YouSendIt Size Limit: 1 GB Download Limit: 25 Downloads File Life: 7 Days
DataPickup Size Limit: 250 MB (was originally 1.5 GB but i guess their servers must've gotten bombarded so they had to lower it) Download Limit: 25 Downloads File Life: 7 Days
YouShareIt Size Limit: 50 MB Download Limit: NONE File Life: 7 Days
RapidShare Size Limit: 30 MB Download Limit: NONE (but there is a 75 second download timer and a 1-download-per-hour limit unless you have a Premium Account) File Life: 30 Days+ provided there's still download activity after 1 month
UltraShare Size Limit: 30 MB Download Limit: NONE File Life: 30 Days+ provided there's still download activity after 1 month
MyTempDir Size Limit: 25 MB Download Limit: NONE File Life: 14 Days
UploadHut Size Limit: 50 MB Download Limit: NONE File Life: 30 Days+ provided there's still download activity after 1 month
ShareBigFile Size Limit: 250 MB Download Limit: 250 Downloads File Life: 7 Days
Dropload Size Limit: 100 MB Download Limit: 1 Download File Life: 7 Days
UpDownloadServer Size Limit: 250 MB Download Limit: NONE, but there is a 40-second download timer (similar to Rapidshare's except shorter) File Life: Unlimited
ShareFiles Size Limit: 50 MB Other Limits: I haven't personally tested this so i'm not sure what the limits are in terms of # of downloads and/or file life, but from what i've read there's a bandwith limit and/or something about password protection, not sure what's meant by that though
UploadTemple Size Limit: 30 MB Download Limit: NONE File Life: 30 Days+ provided there's still download activity after 1 month
glint.files Size Limit: 30 MB Download Limit: NONE (i think) File Life: 30 Days+ provided there's still download activity after 1 month Other Features: Password-protected download links, and in the download section, you can enter in a File ID and password (if there is one) to gain access to a download...not completely sure how it works though.
Xdrive (you can initially sign up for a free 15-day trial, but then once that's up your downloads off the server unless you pay for an account) Size Limit: 5 GB Download Limit: NONE (until your free trial period has ended, that is) File Life: Unlimited (again, until your free trial has ended...so it's techincally 15 days unless you purchase an account) ** NOTE ** In order to sign up for an Xdrive account, however, a credit card is needed for the free 15 day trial, so to those under 18 and also those who just don't have a credit card, take this into consideration before signing up. And if you do intend to sign up, be sure to keep watch on those 15 days you have in your trial because once the trial period is up you are immediately billed your first monthly payment of $9.95, so be SURE to cancel the account before your trial has completely ended!!
QuickFile Size Limit: 50 MB Download Limit: NONE (i think?) File Life: 30 Days+ provided there's still download activity after 1 month
bonpoo! (lovely name, eh?) Size Limit: 50 MB Download Limit/File Life: Unknown (still need testing)
MegaUpload Size Limit: 500 MB Download Limit: NONE File Life: 30 Days+ provided there's still download activity after 1 month

another one, didn't see if it was alerady added. http://www.terabit.nildram.co.uk/tattoo/index.htmTattoo lets you paint directly on a 3D mesh in .3ds, .obj and a couple other formats. mesh needs to be UV mapped beforehand ( either in the modeler or a 3rd party app like Lithium Unwrap) has a veraiety of basic painting tools including airbrush, blend, smear, dodge, burn. adjust pixel size, opacity and step biggest thing i noticed so far messing with it is you need as solid ( one piece) UV mapping as possible. example if painting a head, you want as much of the head UV mapped all in one piece, other iwse you gt noticible gaps in the skin where UVs are seperated. You do get to watch the 2D UV skin as your painting on the mesh so you can see the changed directly. here i got a poorly UV mapped mesh and just spraying some colors on it just to try it out. need a far better UV mapping job done prior to tring to paint it. there is a tutorial here on using Tattoo as well as this guy wrote several for Wings3D Blender and GIMP http://www.pagodaproductions.com/tiki/tiki-page.php?pageName=Tutorials

Both of those are already included and have been from the very beginning. I love Wood Workshop. I've submitted a new version of the master Guide. It should be updated next time that mod is online.

OOps how about Photomodeler Lite? Is a pro version thats pricey but with a bit of looking can find the free version of it ( i got it a few days ago) I can probably find the site again I found the lite version because the developers site no longer has it. inculdes some walk through tutorials on using the tool. its just draw lines then referance vertex points between photos and it builds the mesh and uses the phots to UV skin it.

http://www.sausage.com/reptile-free.htmlReptile. 2D tile making program has lots of effects. http://harmware.com/stile.htmsTile 99 another nice tile texture generator http://www.ultimatepaint.com/ultimate paint. Not the greatest paint program but its several steps above MS paint. (get the freeware version from here, not the trial demo thats listed right above it) http://www.michisoft.com/programs/sprite/index.htmsprite consttruction tool. for making 2D sprites like used in 2D games http://www.michisoft.com/programs/vbloade.htm need VBrun300.dll to run it, get it here http://www.resene.co.nz/ezypaint/main.htmez paint. pretty cool tool actualy. take a few scren shots of your level prior to texturing, now using ez paint, you can experiement with colors etc till you find the right combination. then when got it right, save and it exports each texture color sample used. http://www.steffengerlach.de/freeware/Z-Paint. I use this allot to make panels and buttons http://home.hccnet.nl/h.van.oerle/phomod/phomod.htmPhoto modeler Lite Also this site has 2 additional tutorials for the program. The tutorials run right inside the program. easy to follow. easy to use. http://www.v-d-l.com/index.php?section=7&page=25some photoshop plug-ins. I like this one. does various camoflage theams Has many already pre generated for various nationalties. plus you cna generate your own. Other plug ins here too like Nightvision http://park18.wakwak.com/~pixia/powerful paint program toss up if i will ultimatly use this or my copy of photoshop lite. has many of the same abilities of other commercial products. what drew me to this program is its ability to get results like when realy painiting. watercolor washs, color blending, bleeding etc. http://www.telefragged.com/wally/Wally texture tool and WAD file builder/manager. http://www.cc.gatech.edu/classes/AY2000/cs4455_spring/planetquake/modediting.htmlqME to open and work with them older quake and quake 2 models, espeicaly when the skins don't carry over because of the low bit pallette

I mentioned this one a couple years ago, not sure if it has been mentioned again or not but found it going through my pile of bookmarks and didn't want it to sink in and get buried again. There are probably too many free plugins for PSP to mention here but I will mention of as PSP9 doesn't have a Highpass filter which is useful for tileable textures and the free Mehdi one I used previously works in PSP8 but not PSP9. http://www.photo-plugins.comIt is called the Highpass Sharpening filter which is a popular method of sharpening an image that does a more natural job than just 'sharpen' but if you check the 'View Highpass' box you get a standard Highpass.

Mura Mucho! http://www.geocities.com/murakuma/These have been around a little while but I didn't appreciate how good they were. I was looking for a free cloud plugin at work today and revisited this site. Since there have been a few posts regarding skyies and clouds I think you will love this Photoshop/PSP plugin in particular as well as some of the others. It generates great seamless clouds and noise including water-like, terrain and other presets. Awesome. Wish I had remembered it a few weeks ago as it made in a few seconds a pretty good cloud layer and I spent hours rendering fog and clouds in Terragen and Carrara at the highest settings.

Whilst looking at the OGRE-site, I stumbled across a link that explains how to compile the OGRE progs (C++) using MicroSoft's free VC++ compiler (comandline) together with the Code::Blocks IDE. I downloaded the required files for the MS Platform SDK and the DirectX9 SDK (HUGE ! I think more than 650 MB were downloaded - thanks MS for bloatware) as well as Code::Blocks (small in comparison ) and used it with the 3DGS SDK ... it worked quite nicely (just using the sample files provided - haven't done any coding with it myself). You need to download and install the VC++ Toolkit (http://msdn.microsoft.com/visualc/vctoolkit2003/) the Platform SDK (http://www.microsoft.com/msdownload/platformsdk/sdkupdate) the DirectX SDK (http://msdn.microsoft.com/directx) the Code::Blocks IDE (http://www.codeblocks.org/) It does take a while (no, really ... it does !) Just to let any of you shoestring-budget programmers know ! Cheers, Andreas

Sounds nice, will definitely look it up. Found this one while doing a search today: http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Haven/4386/Here some info about it: Quote:
FractMus 2000 is a Win32 application that creates Fractal/Algorithmic music using mathematical algorithms from chaotic dynamics, fractals, number-theory and cellular automata. Its features include: full midi-file support, sixteen independent voices, complete control of midi parameters (instrumentation, voice dynamics, channels, etc), 12 note-generating algorithms, 15 predefined musical scales (with the possibility of creating user-defined ones), 11 predefined note durations (plus user-defined ones), melody manipulation support (inversion, etc), composition assistants (Composition Maker, Composition Randomizer, Transposer,) full online-documentation/help and more.
Best is, it is totally free!

I think Nadester or another mod should restructure the whole list, because paragraphs like audio/video/authorware/security/encription etc. shouldnt be intermingled for clearness. Here are some new contributions: www.acidplanet.com/tools/?p=acid&T=6420Acid XPress - free "small brother" of Sonys Acid music software. Basic sampling application similar to Magix Music Maker, EJay and/or fruity loops. Its free and if you dont have the others, maybe this is what your are searching for. www.acidplanet.comOriginally meant as community for Sonys Acid (and - Xpress), this platform grows over its horizon: hundreds of indipendent artists present here their music (also musicvideos) mostly done in their free time, produced purely as a result of fun and creativity. Some sell their stuff, most users showcase their tracks. Nearly EVERY genre and subcategory is located there and quality is ranging from amteur to real professional tracks. If you found something that fits into your game, just ask them, be polite and nice. Mosts artist appreciate something like this and I doubt that everyone is forcing you to pay them high fees, maybe nothing. I think there should be no problem with use in freeware products or shareware.. so maybe you dont pay anything when you guarantee advertisement for them in your game. I had success there, so you should do so as well when your polite. I really like that site, I often download stuff from there (free, just registering is needed) and hear it on my MP3 Player. www.peoplesound.comThe same as Acidplanet, but its more a platform for small artists that want to sell their music. But maybe you get also success there. I like the "mood" category feature and the "sounds like.." feature very much www.1001freefonts.comWell, this is quite popular: 1001 fonts offers hundreds of fonts that are mostly free (its rare, but some are shareware haha, well.. most are free and in the disclaimer of each font you can read what to do if you want to use it in a commercial way. Even if you do freeware I would ask the author. Most authors just wanna see where it is used, so be polite and you get it for free. www.anatomyatlases.org/atlasofanatomy/index.shtmlThis is really great, its a free anatomy book with lots of incredible pictures. www.anatomyatlases.org offers also other anatomy and medical ebooks for free, but I picked this one because I'm used to work with it for several months now for my own studies and its useful when it comes to modeling because you know everything after looking into it. Cheers Christian Behrenberg

FREEWARE --- GUIGenie - http://www.guigenie.cjb.net/Originally meant for JAVA GUI authoring, this tool can easily serve as image generator and design tool for prototype GUIs, menus, whatever. Here is a screenshot of a debug menu which I built with GUIGenie and ported then to A6, featuring drop down lists, radio buttons and buttons. Virtually every GUI element can be emulated with A6, remember that. So we need no cheap "programmers art" anymore for prototypes and it also saves a lot of time, because its coordinate system is the same as A6's and we dont need to cook our own images... changes can be easily done when GUI elements are moved or resized..

3D World Studio - http://www.leadwerks.com/Quote:
3D World Studio is the map editor of choice for use with DarkBasic Pro, Torque Game Engine, Blitz3D, and other 3D engines. The program is ideal for game environments, 3D presentations and other commercial applications.
This is a 3rd party level editor. The creator wishes to directly support the 3DGS format and may even hook into the map compiler, so this is looking like it will be a viable alternative to WED(for those who have issues with it). It's a commercial product, but a full demo is available, so you can decide whether it's worth it for you.
Quote:
3D World Studio Features
Editing Extremely fast object manipulation and drawing, designed for efficiency. Select and texture objects or object faces. Stretch, position, mirror, flip, and rotate meshes. Automatic UV mapping. UV mapping tools, including justify and fit to face. CSG operations include carve, hollow, split, and extrude face. Configurable entity system. Adjustable viewports. Accurate grid snap. Draw selection boxes. Export to .x, .map, .dbo, or .dif. Browse meshes by thumbnails. Manage and browse thousands of textures and meshes. Extremely small compressed file format. Edit multiple objects' properties at once. New brush primitives including arches and tubes. View detailed statistical information including polycounts broken down by object type. Texture lock freezes brush texture coordinates. Select a texture by picking a surface. Multiple undo levels. Export .map and compile to Torque .dif in one step.
Meshes Referenced meshes. Load .x, .obj, .md3, or .gls meshes. Shadow-mapped meshes with gile[s]. Adjust scale to fit meshes without distorting vertex coordinates.
Lighting Complete lighting for brushes, meshes, and terrain. Calculate lightmaps, vertex lighting, and uniform lighting. Support for translucent and masked surfaces. Control settings per object for casting and receiving shadows.
Terrain Smooth-blended layered terrain. Support for large-scale terrains. Adjustable terrain subdivision. Automatic edge turning.
I'll be updating the master list with a few of the new suggestions sometime this weekend. No idea when it will get updated, but the RTF will be submitted to a mod sometime in the next day or so.

Thanks laethyn. Added to bookmarks. I haven't seen many tutorial links on the master list. I added my last link on the wiki since it wasn't included in this list update

Hey brilliant thread! Me, I am so pleased with Gimpshop that I've actually dumped using Photoshop for it! It's basically the powerful Gimp editor, but configured to look and act like photoshop, so you haven't really got to learn much in order to use it. Plus it has my favorite color-wheel type color picker, that Adobe wouldn't touch b/c of patent problems! WoooooOoo gimp shop! http://plasticbugs.com/index.php?p=241I look forward to a 3D paint app like Deep Paint 3D, based in Gimpshop. Maybe there's something similar already in Blender.

I think you should add this too. It is something like gamedev, but it has a very good reference and updates on the 3D engines. http://www.devmaster.net/

Also, there are 2-3 dead links in this version. I caught them after I submitted the current version. I'm also going to make a couple more inclusions if I can remember what they were? Sphere was one...the other will come to me eventually. CB Model Pro, the very last link in the list, a few URL changes, and removal of at least 1(Open 3D Project) are what are new this go round. The ones that haven't been changed are "Onnovanbraam blueprints - vehicles & people" and "Lipsync." One is dead(but there's a new link), and the other has a new URL but it will redirect you. New Lipsync: http://www.comet-cartoons.com/3ddocs/lipsync/lipsync.html

Poser 5 is free until Sept. 8th midnight: http://www.contentparadise.com/us/user/free_poser_5_english_full_version_product_21989It was only free until today, but due to overwhelming demand and crashed servers, they doubled the number of days it was available. You have to register, and I still haven't gotten it to accept me they're so overloaded.

I've blatted on about Altiris SVS and how usefull it is to developers so here is a link to the client and some free apps to test. Be warned, you need to follow up at the official site to learn about AV (Anti Virus) and FW (Firewall)compatabilities. If not, PM me about my own experiences as some conflicts with AV/FW can and will blue screen your machine to death. How I worked around this prob was to virtualise ZoneAlarm then set it to activate automatically but manually activate the virtualised Av afterwards, in this case, Active Virus Shield. With this, GStudio can be virtualised in many forms and if something should happen, reset to get back to a working version as first installed. Wnat to cut down on your installed software footprint, svs your apps and import them from a disc when you need them. SITE

Sure, mod privileges would be appreciated. I only want to keep the current pinned list up-to-date, so the best person for the job would be the one who actually updates it. I'll try and add a Wiki version when I have a bit of extra time...perhaps this weekend or next week or whenever it falls in my lap. Sorry if my post(s) made me come off sounding like a jerk (I guess I was in that mood at the time I made them ). Thanks again.

The first update in over a year is now ready and posted, so please see the first post (or click here). This is a major update. I added info to some of the descriptions, deleted dead or changed links, and added many programs or services before confirming it. It also features the new bolding feature that highlights certain entries that I feel should be given a serious look before others (IMHO).

MovieXone 4.0 is discontinued and you can't get a key for it anymore (there's only a MovieXone Plus version for 40€), but here's another very good free movie editing program; Avid FreeDV http://www.avid.com/forms/freeDVRegDownload.asp(I'm just about to test it btw, but thought I'd post it anyways, this 'free' version does lack some features by the the way, but nothing too annoying..) Cheers

After investigating the whole day Google Sketchup, finally, I want to suggest this to be added to the list. http://www.sketchup.com/?dlc=1There are two version: the free version and the professional version, which is quiet expensive (~600 Euro). The disadvantage of the free version compared to the pro edition is the lack of exporters except the Google Earth format. Suprisingly, I found today a free software which is able to read this format and is able to convert it to several other formats: Media Machines Flux Studio http://www.mediamachines.com/make.phpIf you convert it to 3DS, X or whatever you like you can edit it in your favorite 3D modeller or take it as reference shape in WED to rebuild it "from scratch". This is really great! You can create whole interiors and house in minutes with just a few clicks. *gasp*

Well, you can create skins in Sketchup (but very limited as I think) or you are able to create textures from photomatch ressources (from photos which you can use to build geometry). But unfortunately Sketchup saves the skins asnon-power-of-two textures. So this was'nt interesting for me.
I am supposed to rather use the geometry as "3D-blueprint" to rebuilt it with decent skinning in other apps or even in WED. This might sound as "doubled" work but its worth it.

when using this one, make SURE you triangulated the model before importing. it took me ages to figure that out! lol.

I was looking for a free flowcharting solution to help plan programming and game play. I am testing this first one right now and it seems cool, There is a free version and a $20 per year richer one. You create flowcharts in your browser and can store, share and collaberate. http://www.gliffy.com/index.shtmlThere is also Freemind which I've used on and off for several years. It is mind mapping software and also useful for certain types of planning. http://freemind.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/Main_Page

Filter Forge has just released the first in a series of free Photoshop plugins, based on their procedural texture generating program and user created presets, that will allow you to generate some photrealistic textures. The first one is "Metals" and includes 7 filters. You can't create new textures with these but you can adjust the parameters and get some variations. http://www.filterforge.com/download/

Yeah, sometimes that site has some cool games for free there too. Some time ago they had 'Magi' and also the cool 'Immortal Defense' tower defense game. Quite cool. Mostly they have 'bad' casual games though. Cheers

Strange that product, not a rela time 3D engine ! I see customers sections , all are Movies, or some Michima tests scenarios.
Lot of features, but no demo, no game, no demo tools to really compare with others 3D solutions ...
So well, it looks like Gamecore engine, lot of advertisment, but finally lot of raising problems, money was first priority for the developpers of the engine, until finishing to sink !

Hi, I would like to recommend a 3D model search engine: Yobi3D. You can search with simple keywords and see the results in 3D. It's useful to find some already made 3D models for prototyping. Please check it out and any feedback is welcomed. https://www.yobi3d.comThanks!
