Wind is one of my favorite sounds when in the open air (and not by trees). I just happen to have the sound of wind, but this wind sound isn't what you'd expect though it seems so realistic as it is.

Download the 2 1/2-second sample

This is a ZIP file about 11 kilobytes in size (download) but 24 kilobytes uncompressed in it's WAV format.

Does this sound like real wind, about 45 mph winds in particular?

Now this may seem strange, but this sound has been vocalized. Yes, quite literally through me, myself, and I only. I originally recorded it at 100,000 Hz sample rate and reduced the quality as a sample. It sounds so much like real wind, you couldn't tell if it's vocalized or not.

My contribution is that I'm telling you that I'm able to make wind sound so realistic through only my computer microphone in my room and just myself only, no actual wind or equipment required (besides a simple microphone). I don't use any filters either (don't have any as it is). I can record in 8-bit or 16-bit and any sample rate ranging from 1 Hz clear up to 100,000 Hz, including odd balls like 73892, 46180, etc.. I have the ability to clean up errors, stitch different parts of WAV files together seemlessly, and the surprising thing about this: the program I use is 11 1/3 years old.

Edit: if you want, I can make a longer sample if needed at maybe 20,000 Hz instead of 10,000.

How good is the sound of the wind sample?

I think it sounds like wind, but I can easily say, that this is not real wind because real wind sounds different.

It's okay and if I needed such a sound for my game I would use this, because it's great but it does not so very realistic.

Your joking, right?? To be honest, I expected a better replication due to the story that you posted.

To me it sounds like there are too many overtones.

umm.. this sort of thing any old wav editor can do.. who cares? I think you just post things like this so you can write lots of numbers.

I voted the second one down. To be honest, it was better than I thought it would be, only because of the comments posted (seriously lol).

Yea, it's pretty good .

I think the sound is ok. Not perfect, but ok.

Static? Fuzz? I'm not sure how to remove it, but it could be due to two things: the bit depth (I think I'm using 8-bit, a likely culprit) and the low sample rate of the file (10,000 Hz). Perhaps I'll make it 20,000 Hz at 16-bit instead and make a longer sample (5 seconds instead of 2 1/2).
