modo is simply better for the tool as machinery frank said and also baking is really easy. 3dsmax really improve a lot with its graphite tool but still modo has like an insane texturing tool and also sculpting tool.

As far as I know, GMax does not exist anymore. Besides that it was a modding tool with limited export capabilities.

Sueds is right in terms of baking, you can bake ambient occlusion, normal map, height map, lighting only, shadows only, specularity only or whatever with just a simple click or a simple new node in the material tree.
It cannot be easier.

Download GMAX here

i personally use the same tools for character and level modeling: Silo>> Unwrap3D (very robust import/export)>> Engine... no BSP though... for texturing Photoshop>> CrazyBump/X-Normal/giles>> Engine.

you'r absolutely right, the import/export functions are pretty limited, you can only export '*.P3D' which i never heard of.

Thanx man,but i already have the full virsion of 3DsMAX cool ,and i use 'panda *.x exporter plugin' to export .x format.
i just wanted to give GMAX a try,to recommend it to people who can't afford
to buy expensive tools such as 3dsmax.

I use FragMotion (Supports MDL7), EarthSculpture (With HMP export plugin)
and Corel Paint Shop Pro X2 (Not as powerful as PhotoShop but just as good and not a hefty price tag.

Exactly, but there is also the free GIMP. We use it at Dexsoft, no compromise compared to Photoshop. It is basically the same software.

Some of our artists create their models in Blender (free). One of them switched from Max to Blender and he is happy about it.

I use Rhinoceros for creating 3D models and it's great. It's a very powerfull, complex, proffesional program with lots of plugins available, but also quite easy to learn.
I've never used any other programs for modeling, but Rhino is great and I recommend it very much. Anyone interested - visit this site: http://www.rhino3d.com/
