Ok, big problem here. As the title suggests I'm using A6.60. I've tried executing the engine many times on multiple setups and different video cards. When running the engine on a pc that has a 9800+ card in it the engine pops up this error; Error E1242: Can't open video device. According to the manual:

Quote:
E1242 is issued when the D3D device can be opened, but a video device is not available for the given resolution. The engine tries some lower and higher resolutions before giving up. A possible reason could be that an extremely high nexus setting consumed all the virtual memory. So keep the nexus well below 200 MB.

However, It's not nexus issue and it's not a resolution issue, that's already been proven, it doesn't even open the game or try to change resolution, it just crashes as soon as it shows .........done. The pc that has the 9800 in it previously had a GeForce 6600 and had no problems at all, the only hardware change to the pc was the 9800, no new cpu, memory etc.

We've tested the engine on the following chipsets:

Geforce 6100 - no problem
Geforce 6600 - no problem
Geforce 7600 - no problem
Ati X1950 Pro - no problem
Ati 9800 - no problem
Geforce 8800 - no problem
Geforce 9800 - problem mentioned above

We also tested the engine on another pc that had a 9800 in it and it got the same problem. All of the pcs tested have Windows XP on them and have the latest DirectX 9 and their drivers are up-to-date.

I'm thinking the problem has to do with the GeForce 9 series, but I'm not totally sure.

Even if this is the problem is there a solution and/or has this been reported before?

I don't think the problem has something to do with the Geforce 9 series. I think the hint is that the video card did not come with the PC but was manually installed afterwards.

But can you post the acklog?

FYI mpdeveloper_B, I have found over the YEARS that after installing a new video device, and its specific drivers,
directx really does need re-installing... (including a reboot even though it doesnt request one).
Just a reinstall over the top is fine, no un-install required.

@jcl: I can't post it at the moment, it's not my pc and I don't have access to it, but when I can I'll see if we can get the acklog.

@EvilSOB & jcl: I would normally agree with you, but the problem is singled out to A6, no other problems whatsoever with anything else. The pc he has was built, so not bought from a manufacturer. I'll recommend the person trying it, but like I said, A6 is singled out in this problem. Not to mention that the pc that has the Ati X1950 didn't have it originally either, it had changed cards and we didn't have any problems out of it either.

edit: I emailed the guy that has the two 9800s and told him to do the diagnostic run for the acklog and to reinstall his directx without uninstalling it. He should either give me the results or post them himself (he's a part of this forum).

That's indeed the usual reason for such a problem. The Geforce 9 is detected, but does not work properly with DirectX 9.

This can happen when you plug in a new 3D card, but don't install its video driver, or install a wrong driver. The owner of that PC should first deinstall all previous video drivers completely, then install the recent DirectX version, and then the proper GF9 driver, ideally the recent driver from the nVidia website.

Of course, it can be something completely different, such as a too weak power supply for the GF9. Then it can sometimes work and sometimes not. But in 99% of all those cases, it's a wrong video driver. Despite all claims to the contrary, other DX9 games won't then run either.

That sounds right, but not at the same time. After we were done trying to open the engine he ran Half-Life 2 and Half-Life 2 Episode 1, both are DX9 games and they ran without any problems whatsoever. However, when he tried to run PreVa (the game we released last year) it crashed just the same as Kino One did.

I don't think that is the problem, or else HL2 wouldn't have worked.

HL2 has countless of fallbacks behind the scene going on if things don't work perfectly... Your best bet is reinstalling the drivers or DX9 though.
