In between class, work, and my girlfriend... I have been working on a basic RPG demo. I have decided to divide the game up into chapters. This is a preview of Chapter 1.

Chapter 1 will take the longest due to the fact that it will require me to build each system .... of course. From movement to the battle system. Everything is in motion as planned. It's been only a month and I have made huge progress...

Here's what a 1-man team can do... It's not pro quality... But it shows how nice of an engine 3DGS really is for an individual. I have a friend working on a skin for the model... but I haven't heard from him in a few weeks... So...

Looks nice, i like the start up menu. Although the level design could use some work.

Please say something about the project...

It's not meant to "look" nice. I'm just posting the progress of my project. This is only ONE month into it... It's not going to "look" nice... otherwise it would be in Showcase II

If you cannot constructively contribute to this project then please do not post. Broozar, specifically this is a warning for you. If your going to say why it doesn't look good, you need to give supporting statements as to why. Leaving it a bland line like you did is unappreciated by the poster and you need to take that into consideration.

Thanks

It looks very nice!

I like the menu and the gameplay, but the models are the weak point (you know it).

But overall a good one-man-projekt...

I like this project, Im really impressed that you have done it in this short time.

The handling itself feels like Ultima Online, I dont know if you know that game, its still one of my favourites.

Im looking forward to see more of this project, in the video, you mentioned everything about improvements, I was thinking about.

good work so far, keep it up.

yes, something more constructive:

what you show us: a main menu, the so-called first level, inventory, save/load, ripples, particles, movement.

what you talk about: what will be done, what will be improved, what will be fixed, and all the things that are only temporarily.

graphics: very basic. landscape is empty, grass is funny (block/square grass, funny mountain-like sprite), animations are humble, water looks like 1997, ripples... look differently, hud does not have th flair of an rpg. but as you stated, it's all wip and you wanted to focus on coding.

coding: ripples - nice idea, needs improvement in timing and look, particles - look like EP3 standard, battle mode - meele combat over a distance of 12 metres?, inventory - you just said it's working, you didn't show really, save/load: the thumbnail is a neat idea.

what we are left with is your talking: what will be done, what's only temp art etc. so you apologize constantly. i am honestly asking you why you want us to comment on temp-art and a project that has been up for only a month and is maintained by only one individual. things that are working in your demo are movement, save/load, and some particles, that is all. i find this very little to be impressed. it's not a critics to your project, i am questioning your way of presenting things that are not _yet_ worth presenting at all. even if SC1 is a WIP showcase, it's always a question how far back in the creation process you are willing to go. i know you can do better.

I thought he was mainly concentrating on code for now, from what I understand from his post.
in this case, he's pretty far into it, and none of you have questioned that.
so if he's showcaseing code, are you saying us poor programmers may not showcase, because we'll always be using dummy models and bad levels?
i mean: if you showcase code, it doesn't have to look good at all. it needs to work. and that it does.

see, by showcaseing the temporary art, he's already made aztec contribute, maybe more will follow. if you don't showcase good code with temporary art, no one will be able to help you getting better art.

I know it can be frustrating to see lots of undone things in showcase 1, things that aren't nearly at the level of completion, but that's what showcase 1 is for. it says nowhere that the art needs to be good looking. it can be terrible art, as long as theres a demo or a screen, he posted both. he's mainly showcasing code, not art, I believe...
just my humble opinion...

sorry, for the half-off-topic...

back to the project: good job. keep it up. and maybe, in a month or two, when more things are working you can ask for help in jobs offered...? people will want to do art when they see that code's working well...:)
