while i always thought no one would ever play politics kind of games and the like, he seems to be pretty successful with his niche stuff.

I just like the style he is making and presenting his games.
Concentrating on Indy-games with good gameplay.
He also has a "friendly" website.

I like especially Starship-Tycoon.

i agree, also his success is quit motivating for me, as he does not do the kind of tradition portal casual games but still the portals feature his games. you can see the money he made within a year here:
