Hi,

Has anyone checked out the open source papervision 3d engine?
Seems quite good for small 3d elements on websites,
nothing major though but as it uses flash not too much of a problem
for having to download tedious viewers.

I am really not a fan of viewers that you have to download, most people going to a site in the commercial world cannot be bothered to download new viewers.

Hi,

papervision is - like you say "quite good for small 3d elements".
My experiences are that it's a plugin/engine full of possibilities and gadgetry.
For "bigger" projects (like small games) it's currently too half-baked in speed and render accuracy.

On the other hand there are some nice demos on the flexblog...

Maybe v2 will be better and stable enough for small business projects.
I've send a colleague to a training these days (http://entwickler.de/zonen/portale/psecom,id,99,news,39346,p,0.htm) to learn more about the engine...

If you're interested I'll post some of the "news" about papervision next week...

Please do!
All I want to do at the moment is learn some actionscript 3 and use papervision to add some small 3d sculptural looking shapes onto a new site I am doing for myself that react to my mouse pointer.

Mercury are you able to post your news yet?

Does anyone know if actionscript 3.0 can be written outside flash?
I mean the new version of flash cs3 is lots of money. If I need flash I just use a programme that came with my web editor from NAMO, its called freemotion.
As with the web editor I am ust using it to place things, then am using xhtml and css to finish it off.

Is there an alternative cheaper way to script/programme 3d things for the web that is not going to die out too soon, what about Java?

Many thanks.
