So far, I have heard of things like Manhunt2 bieng given an AO, that RPG being given an M because of a mod, and I have to ask, what can the ESRB do for me?

I see it like this: They play it, and they rate it. Now, I understand some stores don't sell games if they don't carry an ESRB rating, but this raises my ultimate question: Doesn't the ESRB just limit you? If you have an ambitious title, and they give it an M, that means that nobody under 17 can buy it, which is a relatively large group. Also, if they give it an AO, almost no stores will sell it.

So I just have to ask, what are the good things about the ESRB?

They give us that all-important message at the start of games

"Warning: Game experience may change during online play"

Apart from that...not sure

Thanks,
Adoado.

Allows you to be picked up by national retail chains... walmart and the like don't use non-ESRB rated games.

Otherwise, nothing. It's purely up to you if you want to be rated by them and there is no law that says you have to. Basically, unless you have a title that is going to be used by a major national chain, don't bother with it.

Major retail chains and consoles require an ESRB rating of M or lower. No rating, no sale.

If you are selling the game yourself, and its on the PC, then don't worry about it.

Oh, just because I've seen so many rants on the ESRB, let me just make some things clear: The ESRB doesn't ban or censor games (it only gives ratings). ESRB ratings are only guidelines, it isn't illegal to sell M or even AO rated games to minors. The ESRB is a private company (like the Movie rating board).

Some people in the US government want to eliminate the ESRB so they can create their own rating system (you do NOT want this to happen).

The ESRB is overrated anyways, but yeah we definitely do not want some parents protest group to get the power to 'demand bans' for all the games théy don't like but would not ever played anyways ...

Just out of curiosity, is this true for all states?

Cheers

Is it the ESRB that determines whether it is rated M or whatever it's rating is?

not in australia, mate, but yeah. in aus we still get the esrb notices "experience may change during online play" as you've noted, but the esrb rating has nothing to do with the game's classification in australia. we have our own board and set of rules.

which suck, btw. no ratings higher than ma15+. i wrote an email asking about it, and telling them why they're contradicting themselves (if you see their code you'll know what i mean), and they sent me a letter from the governor general's office saying that they've had a couple meetings in the last two years to discuss their rules, but no explanation as to why they suck.

there's my rant for the day.

In holland we also have our own rating system, called PEGI, i know the UK has one of it's own as well (the red circle with 15+ in it, lol, dunno their name).

So yeah, it would probably all be different in every country.
you could have a rating of AO in america while in EU it would be 16+

imho all these ratings are all a bit a bit useless, they are just guidelines to parents, but if a kid wants the game, they'll ask an older brother/nephew/uncle to go out and buy it...

PHeMoX: So far, in all the US states, it isn't illegal to sell M-games to minors (or, technically AO games). The same is true for movies, music, books, art, etc.

Some states (California included) are trying really hard to change this for games but, so far, they haven't managed it (free speech and all that).

Note: While it isn't illegal to sell AO games to minors, it is illegal to sell them "pornography". So, selling "Manhunt" is legal but selling them the Playboy Sim game isn't.
