With Win XP 64 ibit operating systems in place, and the new vista operating system soon to go live, I was just curious if you guys had any plans to incorperate 64 bit capabilities into a future 3dgs upgrade.

I realize that a lot of people wont be able to take "full" advantage of the new 64 bit capabilities right off the bat ( as hardware will need upgrades, and drivers as well..and the like), but I also realize that with 64 bit OS's coming into effect, that it means we will be able to have more memory onboard the computers, plus a whole host of new abilities..there is a big difference from 32 bit to 64 bit....just curious what the Contic's plans were in this area.

Maybe I could answer that question when you explain what you mean with "incorperate 64 bit capabilities". Gamestudio is a game development system and not an OS.

No, the lighting engine won't need DX10.

Changing to DX10 depends on when Vista comes out. We'll normally try to use features from a new DX version as late as possible, i.e. not before it has become widespread and is running on more than 60% of all PCs.

isn't it possible to make it possible to let the users of the engine choose which renderer they want to use?
I know there will be other features in dx10 but maybe it is possible to support them both.
?

This is theoretically possible by producing two engine versions, one for DX9 and one that uses DX10.

However, this would make things unnecessary complicated. I don't think that we'll maintain two versions.

why do you want to choose renderer? I think that "A6 edition" will be updated for 2 years (but only as 32-bit) ,and A7 will be only for vista and only dx10 and 64-bit system.

The thing I like about Gamestudio is it's wide support for common systems and not being forced to use the latest and greatest hardware. But, in order to run A7 in the near future i'll need update everything to Vista and get 64bit systems, also expect that anyone using my game doing the same?

Don't worry. The engine certainly won't require DX10 or Vista in the near future.
