I created a terrain using "Geoscape 3d", exported it to the "3d Mesh, MDL5" format and loaded it into a new 3dgs project. The size was 512 by 512 and when I built it and then tried to play it, it came up with an error that said, "> 65000 vertices." Is the vertice limit on a per model or is it a per level basis?
Thanks everone in advance.

I have that problem too. I have a terrain that is 120,000 verts which I reduced to about 60,000 using Bryce 5. My texture, however is 1024 x 1024. If not for that, my terrain would look crappy. I think that 65,000 is the limit per model, but I heard that HMP files can be much bigger. I could be wrong, as I've not yet figured out how to convert a 3DS model into a terrain or a altitude mask into a height map.

Not sure if this helps, but I thought I would just share your max vert limit woes.

Thanks Shaque....I can just build 256 x 256 mdl files and put several of them within my level.....It's my fault for being to cheap to just buy the upgrade which would allow me to then use hmp formatted files.....My landscape textures are not ment to be of the realistic type so quality of texture is no problem for me. Thanks for your input tho!!!

Im not positive about about the vertice limit but I 'think' its per model tho I could be wrong about that.

Your probally better off going with models for your terrains anyways. Uli wrote alot about the comparisons and from what he said theres alot more advantages then disadvantages.

As for creating a hmp file from 3ds. Just open med and click file >import>from 3ds... then Click edit > convert to terrain.

If you stuck to hmp rules... Ie all grids the same size and only z values changed then it should convert with no problem.

For height maps open med go to file>import>terrain from pic.

I've tried that Fei, but I can't export a terrain from a 3DS model. And when I convert the model to MDL, the terrain doesn't work right in WED. The player walks right through certain slopes and gets stuck where there is no slope. I've figured out a great way to make awesome terrains, but none of them work properly.

Did you scale the terrain up any?... If I remember correctly thats the reaction that happens when the terrains polygons are too large. You need to create a more dense grid.
