The fuck?

If they're heading for releasing one os per year I'll definitely stick with Windows 7.

Look what arrived in my mail today!

I don't even have a computer that can read DVDs anymore...

Re: Windows 10 gets announced - 09/30/14 19:36

Microsoft sends you Windows DVDs in the mail? o.O

Re: Windows 10 gets announced - 09/30/14 20:23

What I find more interesting is the fact that the dvd doesn't catch fire regarding where he put it.

You've got that backwards, Win95 was pretty great. Then Win98 came along and anally raped everyone with internet explorer and active X integrated into all of the default apps. Not to mention the desktop ads.

Re: Windows 10 gets announced - 09/30/14 22:56

I used Windows ME for a year. Ask me about my mental health issues.

But! Okay, guys, this might sound strange coming from me, but I love Windows 8. I love it on my surface, and I actually am getting really used to it on the Desktop (I used the 90 day Enterprise evaluation editions before). Oh, and about the DVD. I bought Windows 8.1 Pro. I could've done without the DVDs, but they only let you download the English version if you buy the backup versions as well.

Oh and since we are at the topic, I'm currently getting all hyped up about the new Microsoft. That company is kicking some serious ass on almost all fronts.

Re: Windows 10 gets announced - 10/01/14 02:33

Yeah, I'm looking forward to Windows 10. There were rumours the other day that Windows 9 will be a free update to Windows 8 users (a Service Pack with a bigger number to shake off some stigma, really), and since they're saying 10 is still very early in development, perhaps Windows 9 isn't technically being skipped altogether.

But yeah, looking forward to what is hopefully the next good one in their backpedal-from-the-bad-and-improve-the-good cycle.

EDIT: On second thought, having actually looked through MasterQ32's link this time, they're quite open about not having a "Windows 9" at all. Never mind my rambling.

I'm just looking forward to seeing what comes of this!

Win NT is badly missing from the list. When I worked as a design engineer, I used it with a CAD/CAM system and was rock solid. But lacked DirectX...

Re: Windows 10 gets announced - 10/01/14 09:26

I think Microsofts general direction right now is pretty good.
Imho Windows 8.1 wasn't bad at all. Windows 8 had some flaws, but it was usable as well. I'm using it ONLY from desktop PCs and i'm all happy. You don't have to use any modern ui app except for os settings and the new start menu.
And the start menu kicks ass. You have much more control over what you want to see and what you don't want to see. Also the second dimension works pretty good, you can organize everything in groups and just have the stuff you use in high frequency. Everything else is just start by typing the name in.

Let's see how the new ideas with multi-desktops, changed start menu and so on will work out.
I think that most of the stuff will change until release of Windows 10.

Also what I would like to see in (any) Windows is a built in Tiled Window Manager. That would be just awesome if it is done right.

Wenn ihr schon so zählt, dann bitte auch mit den Versionen zwischen Windows 3 und Windows 95!
Posted By: Redeemer

Re: Windows 10 gets announced - 10/01/14 16:24

Es gibt keinen Version zwischen Windows 3 und Windows 95 (Win95 = Win4)

Re: Windows 10 gets announced - 10/01/14 17:13

Yeah but the image takes "Windows 9" into account that also does not exist. Also Windows NT doesn't appear. tongue

Right now i'm downloading the technical preview, wanna try it on HyperV....

Re: Windows 10 gets announced - 10/01/14 17:58

Yeah I thought I might've been missing something there. But those images are never correct anyway.

Re: Windows 10 gets announced - 10/01/14 18:13

NT was a separate development branch, like 2k.

Technically Windows XP is the follower of Windows 2k (= NT 5.0), but for the private end user it was sold as follower of Windows ME.

DOS based:
Windows 1.0
Windows 2.x
Windows 3.0
Windows 3.1
Windows 95
Windows 98
Windows Me
(Follower: XP, not DOS based anymore)

New Technology:
(at first targeted enterprise use only)
Windows NT 3.1
Windows NT 3.5
Windows NT 3.51
Windows NT 4.0
Windows 2000
(from here on, also for private users, finally with PnP)
Windows XP
Windows Server 2003
Windows XP Prof. x64
Windows Vista
Windows Server 2008
Windows 7
Windows Server 2008 R2
Windows 8
Windows Phone 8
Windows RT
Windows Server 2012
Windows 10

Taking away the server, tablet and phone editions, the picture is not all that wrong anymore (seeing fromprivate user's perspective) tongue

Windows 1.0
Windows 2.x
Windows 3.0

Windows 3.1
Windows 95
Windows 98
Windows Me
Windows XP / Windows XP Prof. x64
Windows Vista
Windows 7
Windows 8
Windows 10

Re: Windows 10 gets announced - 10/01/14 18:36

you're forgetting Win 3.11
Posted By: FBL

Re: Windows 10 gets announced - 10/01/14 18:43

Officially 3.11 is an improved version of 3.1 and not considered an own Windows Release.
Same applies to the China-only Windows 3.2.
Posted By: Michael_Schwarz

Re: Windows 10 gets announced - 10/01/14 19:34

So basically what you are saying is: Win 3.11 was a Service Pack before Service Packs were cool?
Posted By: FBL

Re: Windows 10 gets announced - 10/01/14 19:38

It is Win3.1 Second edition so to say.
There is also a second edition of Win95 and Win98.

The one Windows sticking out however is Windows 8.1. Treated like some "second edition" by Microsoft, it internally is handled like a complete new Windows. (Win 8 = NT 6.2, Win 8.1 = NT 6.3)

And that's not what I'm saying, that's what someone put on Wikipedia tongue

Matter of opinion! Plus, I used Windows 2000 loads before XP came around, so I refuse to accept it's not that important.
Posted By: FBL

Re: Windows 10 gets announced - 10/01/14 20:03

I don't think it's about importance.
Considering the fact, that the picture above most likely was created for the typical private internet user having some fun with Windows, it possibly makes sense to try to explain the picture by looking at the Windows Releases for home PCs tongue

While several more experienced people may have had their home installation of Win2000, this for sure was not the standard case. Microsoft itself considered Win2000 back at that time too resource greedy and bulky for home use - this is why they kicked in WinMe which only came to existence because the real goal of merging their product lines was coming late and happened later in form of WinXP.

And of course - matter of opinion.
I just had the same thoughts (every 2nd Windows seems to be crap - a simple reminder which up to now worked perfectly fine for me grin ) today at work and needed to waste time. So I thought about the same question which came up here: what about NT?
...and started looking up information tongue

Re: Windows 10 gets announced - 10/01/14 20:37

However when looking at the picture again I think Win10 will be a good thing. They had enough time to collect all complaints about Win8 and fix it grin

Re: Windows 10 gets announced - 10/01/14 20:50

Why Windows 10 is called Windows 10. Makes a shit ton of sense if you ask me

Re: Windows 10 gets announced - 10/01/14 21:01

That sounds plausible, yes.
