Intel Pentium D Dual Core @ 3.00GHz each; GeForce 9600GT 512MB "Extreme" -- that is, decent overclocking out the box; 4GB of RAM (3.12 usable, apparently); 40GB HDD with XP on it, 120GB HDD with Windows 7 on it, 500GB external HDD; 17" BENQ Screen + 15" LG Screen; Wacom Intuos3 A5Wide Graphics Tablet -- no real mouse but I plug in a generic Microsoft mouse for some games.
Intel Core Duo E6850 @ 3.00 Ghz 4 Gb Ram 2x Gforce 8900 GTS 512 MB ca. 1,8 Terrabyte HD LS DVD Drive 19" und 22 " TFT-Widescreen Sound Onboard und Soundblaster FX Win XP Sp2 (manchmal SP3, wie ich grad will^^) Win Vista Ulitmate

Quite evident of how you hardly read through the entire thread, but you're certainly right in how that's a better representation of what people have these days.
Then again, the Steam community of gamers probably also is mostly the higher-end spectrum of gamers around the world, wanting to run the latest games and so on.
