Windows permission issues

Windows permission issues - 09/18/18 06:21

I just downloaded 1.83.2 and installed it, but I can't run it. I had to install as admin, but I am logged in as a standard user. I do not have permission to open the .chm file or run the executable.

I am in the weeds with takeown and icacls, and it doesn't seem like things should be taking me down this road.

Is this installer broken, or am I doing something wrong? I installed Zorro a year ago on a different machine and never had this problem.

Any idea what's going on??

You can install Zorro as admin or as normal user on a Windows PC. Only take care that you have full access rights to that PC and don't install it in a special folder with limited access. If in doubt, use the default folder.

Thanks for your reply, jcl. I can't seem to run the installer without putting in my admin credentials first. Is there a way around that?

And I tried installing in multiple locations including within my own /Users folder and in C:Zorro_1.83.2, but nothing seemed to help with this problem.

I've been using Windows for a long time and have never encountered this kind of problem before. I'm assuming this is user error, but I have no idea what I'm doing wrong.

I have also not yet heard of this problem. Which Windows version is that?

It's Windows 10 Home, Version 1803, build 17134.285

How can I run the installer without being an admin? Maybe that would solve this problem. But when I run the installer, it makes me put in my admin password or PIN to allow the installer to run.

The installer makes you input your admin password?? That does not sound good.

I would run a thorough virus and malware check on that PC. The Zorro installer won't ask you for a password.

No, not in the installer. It pops up the UAC for me to authorize the installation, since I am running under a standard account.

I think this issue is not related to Zorro. Are you using your company's pc and own restricted privileges? Contact your administrator/key user and ask for permission.

Otherwise use another PC or use a VM with administrator privileges.

I suspect you're correct, since I have no problem with Zorro on another Windows 10 machine.

But both are my own machines, and in both cases, I have admin logins but normally run as a standard user. I've never encountered anything like this except when trying to run Zorro on this one machine.

That reminds me, during installation, you are asked to enter your name. Is there any significance to what you enter in that field? Could my issue be related to that?

I don't think so. But Windows 10 will overtake account settings of your registered mail if you have ever used the mail with another windows 10 system. But as far I know those things are just related to your personal user interface.

Possible solutions:
- May sound trivial but try to enter no password
- You could try to activate the net administrator by opening the command prompt and entering:
Code:
net user administrator /active:yes

The admistrator account should be available now. Press the Windows key and try to login with the administrator account. Now retry the Zorro installation.
