Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers ®, Jane Jensen’s classic adventure game featuring a series of voodoo murders, New Orleans, forbidden romance, and the most charming womanizer you ever met, is back. Winner of numerous industry awards when it appeared in 1993, this 20th anniversary update will be better than ever with high res graphics, an all new remastered soundtrack, behind-the-scenes goodies, and the great gameplay and story of the original.

A comparison. 20th Anniversary Edition (work in progress) to the left and the original 1993 version to the right.

One of the great point and click, adventure games ever has been receiving the remake treatment for the past few months, now. It's getting a graphical overhaul, as well as rerecorded score, and a few new goodies. Click the link above to read all about it. I hope Jane Jensen does well with it, and that we get that promised fourth title in the series.

This title has always been a great source of inspiration, for me, when it comes to squashing the game creation bug. I recommend it for anyone wishing to learn the design and gameplay techniques (one aspect of them, anyway) the genre has to offer. It's not for the faint of heart, so something to keep in mind if more mature subject matter is something you tend to avoid. If you want to see a good example of what the FMV (full motion video) genre can do (when executed properly), I also recommend the first sequel: The Beast Within: A Gabriel Knight Mystery.

It's great to be a fan of the genre these days given all of the sequels, remakes, and new IP coming out these days. Kickstarter has been a huge part of that (now let's hope Tim Schafer gets Grim Fandango back....he's wanting it and Broken Age has given him lots of leverage).

I think it looks really nice. I never played the original(s). Is the gameplay (puzzles/talking etc.) logical/obvious or do you need to click on alot of stuff to find out what you are supposed to do? The latter is kind what holds me back playing some of these kind of older games.

, yes but it is really hard to pull it off well and expensive (so kudos to the developers if they done it right).

It's a point and clicker, so you have to search for hotspots. There was a trailer released for this title, at GDC, since I created the post. It looks pretty nice.

I never got into FMV games, but there are a few bright spots. A new Tex Murphy game was successfully Kickstarted a few months back, and it is 100% FMV and uses a lot of the same actors from the old titles. It's cheesy as all FMV are but the TM games have a following, so it's great that they get to see it continue.

, I just checked the trailer thingy on kickstarter of Tex Murphy, that looked quite fun too indeed. But also like I said fmv is expensive, and you can also see that at the amount they asked from backers. 450.000 for an indie is quite alot. Anyway will be interesting to see how the games will turn out to be.
