texture data based animation

hi,

what do you think: would it be faster to read animation data from a texture in a vertex shader (vertex or preferably bone animation), than using the default way of animation? only a model export format needed from which a texture can be created...
I read some time ago (probably in a GPU Gems) that this method has been used in CryEngine (maybe in an old version).
