.mdl to .blend, need help converting

.mdl to .blend, need help converting - 08/21/11 15:23

I´ve got a couple of mdl files, which I need in blender including uvs and textures. It seems as if MED can only export .3ds, .asc or .txt files. The problem is that either asc nor 3ds are exported with uvs and the txt basicly seems to contain gamestudios own internal format, which I can´t just import with anything.
So is there any alternative to writing my own importer for the txt files? I just have about 7 models that I need in blender.
If any one is willing to help me converting, please tell me and I will send you the models, or if you´ve got some tips on what to try, that could be just as helpfull.

Thanks!

You can send it over to me, if you like.

in case you are looking for a general solution:
Copy the fbx-dlls from the med_plugins folder of an older acknex version into the med_plugins folder of your current version.
Then you are ableto export to fbx.

With the free fbx converter of Autodesk you can batch-convert the fbx files to obj.
And obj can be imported in Blender.

This partly works, but my texture assignements are all lost...

At which step?
Maybe, you just have to re-assign them via "Replace Image" in Blender. I'm not sure though.

At converting to obj, or importing it in blender.

Nope, because there is no texture I could replace.

Okay, my memory is really bad.
Just tried it here and its the same.
But, at least the uvs are still existing?
I fear that you have to load the textures seperately, then.

Quite some work, but at least acceptable: grouping things together per texture in MED -> exporting to fbx 2005 -> converting to obj -> adding the texture names into the objs .mtl file -> importing into blender with the groups -> assigning the textures in the correct order -> joining the groups together -> DONE.

Quite some work, but with 3 to 10 textures for 7 models as it is the case for me, this at least works.
