Assault! - Multiplayer 4VS4 Shooter - 01/09/11 20:08

Assault! is a 4VS4 Multiplayer Third Person Shooter.

You can choose the Marines team or the Resistance team, the game is based in small levels in a team deathmatch gameplay style.

The Marine soldier, equipped with an M4A1 carbine:



The Resistance soldier, equipped with an AK-47 Assault rifle:



The gameplay is simple, you enter the server and you choose one of the two teams, there will be several rounds in which you have to kill the other team, similar to CS, COD and these types of games.

Basic gameplay and HUD is done. I have to add a menu and round system and I hope to upload the first version soon.

yes, you are right, but these are insurgency soldiers, not official state soldiers, for example from iran, who have an advanced suit.

I added him the weapons, modified textures and animated, for the arab soldier I also modified the model a bit.

lol I just wanted to show the appearance of the characters, as I said I have still a lot of things to do. I opened this thread to show the progress of development, and it will be free so I haven't too much to promote.

You should make the difference between the arab soldier and the usa soldier greater. Otherwise it will be hard to play (because of friendly fire ^^).

A video of your scripting process would be interesting!

What I find especially interesting is the third person thing.
Do you already have methods for fluid and accurate camera movement and aiming?
And how do you handle animation blending with different animation sequences for upper body/lower body?

That's why I changed the soldier colours, but anyway It can be changed in the future

The camera point of view is this:



As you can see it's and hybrid between standard 3rd person view and 3rd person aiming, with mouse_right you can zoom a bit.

About blending animations, I use ent_bonerotate for the shoot animation (it's done by script) and then it's mixed with ent_animate with walk, run or idle animations.

I really don't like the cameras position, the character takes way to much of the screen and the field of view is fairly limited. Imo you can increase the cameras height by at least 120 pixels (pixels, not quants!)

Regarding the animation thing: Shooting animations fine, okay, can be done by script, but what about reloading, switching weapons and stuff like that?
I'd recommend you to use the ent.pose parameter and ent_blendpose in order to combine these animations with running, walking, etc - it works well, and makes also the transitions between the standard animations smoother.

In the game you can't reload and walk at the same time, it's just a gameplay decision, it could be done easily. But in another project I have I merge walking animations and shoot or reload using ANM_ADD, First you animate the legs and then with ANM_ADD you animate the arms, it also works good.

I also use ent_bone_rotate to rotate player's arms with camera tilt

Well if the accuracy in the zoomed-in-mode is a lot higher then I would prefer the first with arc=55. because your FOV is rather limited and thus a small disadvantage because you might not see any opponent coming in from the side.
Thus the player has always to decide if its better to zoom in and loose some of the viewing area or stay zoomed out and spray the bullets at the enemy rather than hitting accurately.

It usually crashes on connecting for me.. I was able to get in twice, but the game always crashed before I could actually shoot someone. I guess there are timing issues you don't have when testing on a single computer or in LAN. When creating my own server, it looks pretty solid though. has some potential!

EDIT: I was able to play a few round with only me and painkiller playing. I guess the instability came from the higher number of players, maybe the BPS is too high for your server to handle. The native multiplayer tends to crash then.
The game itself is cool, with two players I couldn't see enough strategy yet, but I'm eager to see how the game evolves!

The game seems to get somewhere

Maybe you can change the free roam code some:
when I press the 0 key, I can move the camera, but I can't pan or tilt it.
There is also a bug:
As I got ingame, the character was tilted down, to the floor....
Which doesn't make it easy to win the game!

- run by default and let walk be the button you need to hold
- ability to be running in all directions, not just forward and back
- jump, crouch might be optional but if you dont do them, you need another manuever, climbing up stuff? rolling? something to make combat more diverse, walking around isnt enough to make the game skilled based, if you do them though, i suggest a stamina meter to prevent abuse such as bunny hopping
- rework the shooting mechanism, it might be ok NOW for testing but useless for a real game, i noticed i could shoot around walls when i was nowhere near the edge, your tracing from the camera alone? if yes? not the best idea for a TPS
- your spread doesnt work yet ? i havent noticed any accuracy loss when running or not
- reloading alone is a punishment, stopping them while reloading? omg.. evil,d ont do that tongue

- Yes, run by default can be a good idea, I will make it.
- Running in all directions, I think I'm not very sure what do you mean.
- Shooting mechanism: yes, we noticed what in the game, you could be covered but shoot to the enemy, I think I will solve it doing tho c_traces, one from camera.x and then another from weapon to hit.x, If it founds the same, then there is the shoot.
- Yes, currently there is the same precision standing, walking and running. I will solve it.
- stopping while reloading: seems that people doesn't like the idea, so I will change it and you will be able to move.

About camera effects, I've thought about a DOF effect when you are aiming.

Particle fire is made by rondidion, it's the same effect he had in the original level. It's true it eats fps, but in my HD3650 it runs at high fps. Maybe I can add a particle fire select option in the launcher.

nah, having a particle fire option doesnt truly make alot of sense, remember when you make a game you dont make it for yourself alone wink its not that it needs to be removed just that, comparing quality to performance, its a bit slow

- by camera effects i didnt mean DOF, i meant camera shaking and bobbing
- by all directions i mean, i should be able to RUN diagonally also and left and right, not just forward and back
- you player is too rigid with the camera, meaning, like hes attached to it, maybe you could have him turn just a bit slower than the camera

i was thinking about helping you out by allowing you to use the anims shown here:

however, they werent designed to be realistic and trying to use them in a realistic world might break that world, so maybe you could tell me your plans for this game and how long you plan on working on it

Ok, I will delete that fire.

Now you can run diagonally, but it moves more forward than sidewards, I can make him move more sidewards.
I can smooth player turning, would be simple.

My plan is to make a playable game, and try to solve all bugs and make improvements till i get something close to CS or COD gameplay. I hope in a few months I can get that.

Tried to join, but always got a "No game found." message.

edit: must have been exactly in the "offline"-time, works ok now.

Some remarks:
- Improve movement (absolute speed should stay the same no matter which direction you are running)
- A "Foo killed Bar" message would be nice
- A statistics screen between rounds would reduce the "boringness" inbetween rounds

I played a few rounds 1on1 and had really some fun! Animations and graphics are really nice. But I think there have to be some adjustments for the gameplay:

- The movement and mouse are a little bit sticky. Slower speed while strafing sucks! There have to be an Option for setting the mouse sensitivity.

- In the free camera mode strafing with A and D was inverted for me.

- I'm not really sure about the noise in the shooting script. I stand 3 or 4 meters in front of a wall and shoot with single shoots while aiming. The hits were in a region with the size of a human head. Because of this critical hits over long range are very uneffective. So everybody is rushig and shoots very much - lower tactical component. Its to you, don't know whats your aim for the gameplay.

- Further I had problems to recognize enemies behind me before I get shoot. Maybe some sound adjsutments? And then turning arround and aiming in an acceptable time - very hard! (mouse sensitivity...)



So thats it. I think discussing about this kind of optimization shows the good basic of this project. But with the shooter genre you have a few standards to consider!

Yes, youre right, the bullets do not make much damage.
And I think you should be able to duck and crowl.

But I still love it !

First of all, thanks for you time and for playing.

- Yes I will add running while strafing. Ok, I will add a mouse sensitivity option on settings.

-Yes, already solved.

-Actually if you shoot single shots instead of holding the button the weapon is more precise, but maybe the precision loss is too small, I could increase it.

-Sounds from others are 3D sounds, the problem should be on the sound system itself, let's see what OpenAL will be able to do.

I implemented duck and crawl, but I didn't like the result and removed it.

Development update:

For the next version, apart of adding all your suggests and solving bugs, I'm working on new weapons, which you will be able to buy depending of the score you have on the current game, here is the weapons list:

-Gun (default)
-M16
-AK-47
-MAC-10
-MP5
-MP5 Sniper
-P90
-Benelli M3 Shotgun
-Benelli M4 Tactical Shotgun
-Steyr AUG
-Steyr AUG Sniper
