The throwing game playtest

The throwing game playtest - 08/15/10 17:03

Since a few months I have been building this game.
it is a game that some resemblances with shooters, but it plays different.
instead of simply shooting at other players, you can throw them(and yourself)
Here is a little demo to show it all, because I wanted to test if people like the concept.
if nobody likes the concept, there is not much reason to develop the game any further.
the demo:
the throwing game demo

here are some screenshots, although they don't show any beautiful
graphics or any action(remember it is an early prototype).

I would like to know what you think of it,

and have fun with the demo

The idea is nice, but the controls are somehow very difficult. I just ran around and were bounced from A to B with no plan whats going on. I collectid some white spots, I think that are the target grin

But also when the controls are hard, the idea is very nice.

controls are hard and somewhat weird, it's not working very well to drag and keep the direction... but it might be fun to play when done right

Thanks for the comments, what would you suggest?
I already have some ideas to make the game easier to control,
but I like hearing new ideas.

Re: The throwing game playtest - 08/18/10 18:16

I just checked it out, too. Very nice, and I had the same problem. Enemies are pushing me anywhere. Do you get the enemies pushed? Maybe some tactical advices will already help.

thank you for your comment Ditje
to push the enemies:
reload at a white pillar thing(has no name yet)
to reload ammo
now you can click and drag enemies, and throw them this way
the game is built around this, and throwing the player himself
maybe I should have built a playtest with one opponent, so the game would be easier to start with.

Re: The throwing game playtest - 08/19/10 07:06

Its really hard to push player itself. Not only to collect.

Re: The throwing game playtest - 08/19/10 09:27

I tried it again - and yeah I got one enmy thrown. But enemies are still much to fast for me. I walked around a corner and an enemy was direct in front of me. I had no time to react and got thrown to the sea. May be I am just to old for fast reactions grin

For the first levels it would be better to give enemies a little delay. Or make a tutorial level, where enemies don`t throw player.

But it`s really funny and I guess Multiplayer would be much more funny. Great idea: A mix of 3D-Jump`nīRun and Ludo (US - Sorry, German - Mensch ärgere dich nicht) Keep on developing laugh

Cheers

Re: The throwing game playtest - 08/20/10 18:20

Found a bug.

I started the standard map with the default settings.

After some minutes one of the enemies is jumping "out of the map" and the second one jump in the deep to0, move to the start point and jump again and that in an endless loop.

The movement is strange but itīs a good idea wink

Re: The throwing game playtest - 08/20/10 19:11

Thank you bone, I think I understand the bug you found
the bots are not really smart yet, and if they fall into the water,
they don't realize that it was a mistake laugh
I will try to improve the ai after a while.

Re: The throwing game playtest - 11/18/10 20:08

long time since the last update.
I have improved the controls some, and made the mouse a lot less sensitive.
The game has some new features, such as a level choice menu, and a new player model.
Here is the link to the file: TTG 0.18
Here are two pictures of the new version:
picture 1 - player models
picture 2 - level choice

please tell me what you think about it, and have fun!

Re: The throwing game playtest - 11/29/10 12:40

I didnt manage it to throw the player one time? When I press the left mouse particles are appearing....and then???

Edit: I've got it now...Still way too hard to have sth. like fun

Re: The throwing game playtest - 11/29/10 13:51

thank you for the comment

I think I have to add a manual to the game...
It seems that it is unclear what to do!

what, do you think, would make the game easier?

Re: The throwing game playtest - 11/29/10 14:48

Maybe not to throw with the mouse, just hold the mouse and when you release it you throw yourself in the direction your are looking, u get it? wink

Re: The throwing game playtest - 11/30/10 17:25

Thank you for the idea,
I am going to implement it.
The throwing system of the player was subject to change anyway.
It might be tricky to get the player where he wants to jump.... grin

Re: The throwing game playtest - 12/04/10 03:15

I have downloaded and played this game. i like the idea and it is comeing along nicely. I like Liam's idia about the space bar for jumping instead of the mouse.
it is a game you have to play to get the hang of before you can have fun with it.
i also really liked your tutorial i found it very helpfull.
keep up the good work.

Re: The throwing game playtest - 12/04/10 11:37

@ msmith,
thank you for your comment, it seems the game has some potential at least!

The plans are to remove the self throwing, and just let the player jump(some higher).
I have tried to add automatically throwing, but the game would be very fast(too fast in my opinion).
this would also make the game too hard.
the focus of the game will be around throwing other players, and using power ups.
This is because the game shouldn't be too hard to learn, games are meant to be fun... so I thought.

so, the plan is to make the jumping more the same way as in other games,
maybe a double jump.
