Common energy-flash-effect

Common energy-flash-effect - 12/24/06 09:11

Inspired by Zelda - Twilight Princess I made this energy-effect yesterday.

Maybe the code is useful for those who wonder how to make this kind of effect.
- No shader used
- Usage of Call-by-Reference to handle over the position and give back the entity-pointer
- Press "p" to activate the effect

Oh you're right, the "0" function for "Positions" seems to be disabled in published version.

Thanks ShoreVietam this effect is very cool!

Out of curiosity, where did you see this effect in Twilight Princess?

Re: Common energy-flash-effect - 12/24/06 11:49

Thanks guys.

Where you have to defeat the bugs in the dark world at the Zora's place.

After killing them they become a "willow-wisp" that you have to collect.

Re: Common energy-flash-effect - 12/24/06 12:26

its more of a blue energy ball to me but oh well lol
Posted By: Germanunkol

Re: Common energy-flash-effect - 12/24/06 12:47

Samb... it should be the other way around.
best_game_ever = twilight_princess;

cause otherwise you'd overwrite twilight_princes.. and you wouldn't want that now, would you?

man... I code too much... what I just wrote there was actually the first thing I thought when reading the post...^^

P.S.
looks very cool

Posted By: ShoreVietam

Re: Common energy-flash-effect - 12/24/06 13:09

@Silent_Assasin

Well, color is just a matter of the texture.
The energy flashs that leave the "ball" work the same.

However, that was the first time I actually saw, what operations are needed to achieve that effect since you can move the view behind it and watch it for some time.

Re: Common energy-flash-effect - 12/24/06 13:18

Nice work ShoreVietam, I've just had a short look into the code and I must say when I looked at the effect I thought the script would be 300 lines long but it's not even 150 lines So congratz on the script itself, it's a fantastic piece of work, like the effect showes

Thanks again ShoreVietam, this effect has turned out to be VERY useful

Re: Common energy-flash-effect - 12/27/06 12:17

cool effect

but one question you are owner of Zelda - Twilight Princess and you have the time to create this effect??

greetings
Posted By: ShoreVietam

Re: Common energy-flash-effect - 12/27/06 12:49

I'm glad that it is useful, I already thought so since I wondered how to exactly do it for years!

Well I'm not owner of the game, but my brother is, so sometimes I watch him playing since I love the Zelda games.

It didn't take too much time to create the effect.
But still 3 or 4 hours.

I needed most of the time to orient the energy-flashs to the camera angles (~1-2 hours I think).
The second most time for creating the sprites, the actual effect was done in minutes, but to tweak the parameters until everything looked so nice took some more time.

I think I'll try to make some further effects into this level within the next weeks, just tryin' to get some effects for Dragonrise and letting you take part in how things can be done.

Greets,

looks very good, SV! very interesting work.

Re: Common energy-flash-effect - 12/27/06 15:26

ok here's the next one.

This time a bit more "sophisticated".
It is made out of different "steps":
- Flare to show "charging".
- Streched particles as "charging energy".
- Ice block that blends in using a FFP-Shader.
- "Ice-dust" showing "chilling cold".
- Screen flash with a panel.
- Ice shards showing that the block is burst.

- Use "o" (oh) to activate the effect.

Nice update SV
The script looks even more pro then the previous one
Congratz on the great effect

Light-beam - 12/29/06 14:02

Thanks, I hope the code is more or less clear since I did not take the time to comment further than where a new effect starts.

However, here's a new effect, a light beam inspired by Final Fantasy's Bahamut:

- Lightbeam
- "supporting lightsource"
- simple particles that are "burst away"
- impact flashs
- fast panel-based screen flashs

- use "i" to activate the effect

Re: Light-beam - 12/29/06 14:10

Sweet, when you turn it horizontally, it's like one of those Dragonball z powerblasts hahaha .. Thanks for sharing,

Edit: aah, by the way, an effect as powerful as this one should make the screen tremble as if there's an earthquake!

Like mercuryus siad, it's a nice effect but maybe you should try to let the effect to be 100% faded out before the user can activate another blast
Besides that, the effect is really great
You could make a firework effect for New Year ShoreVietam

Re: Light-beam - 12/30/06 12:13

r u going to share some secret on how you are doing them?
Posted By: ShoreVietam

Re: Light-beam - 12/30/06 12:43

Sure.

Well everything is in the code, but if things are not clear just ask.

The most important things are:
- Make effects fast (so that it's hard to see how they are made)
- Sprites to create a "blurry mass"
- tga textures with those settings:
MY.BRIGHT = ON;
MY.TRANSPARENT = ON;
MY.ALPHA = 0 to 100;
MY.UNLIT = ON;
MY.NOFOG = ON;
MY.AMBIENT = 100;

VL and Stones - 12/31/06 09:26

Good morning guys!

The next two effects are finished, one improved:
1st - Volumentric Light
2nd - Stone-spell-effect
3rd - Light-effect improved

Volumentric Light:
- Uses a shader to create smooth edges even while shifting the texture coordinates.

Stone-spell:
- Dust effect using tga sprites
- Animated Stone models
- Emitting small stones like the ice effect does with ice shards

- press "u" to activate the effect

Energy.exe - Selfextracting WinRAR archive (~ 2MB)

If there are any questions just ask.

Re: VL and Stones - 12/31/06 10:57

Die Effekte gefallen mir echt gut.

Ich werde mal versuchen (wenn ich soweit bin) ein paar davon in mein Spiel einzubauen

Keine Ahnung, ob ich das hinkriege, aber ich hoffe es doch mal.

Re: VL and Stones - 12/31/06 11:00

Sollte gehen, das einzige was du machen musst, ist die Entstehungskoordinate in deinem Spiel ermitteln und damit dann den Effekt aufrufen, damit er weiss, wo er sein soll.

Re: VL and Stones - 12/31/06 12:03

If he would make a game with these great effects, it would be a hell of a game But as I've read in one of his post about Dragonrise, he's hasn't got much time for it which I think is sad because, ShoreVietam you're one
heck of a scripter The game effect's you could make based on this engine would be stunning Just look at the effects you've maded, they're But he, it's a free world

Re: VL and Stones - 12/31/06 13:46

Thanks a lot guys, your comments are really motivating!

One day they'll be in the game for sure!

Here's the next one, a lightning strike.
I hope it's not disappointing that I'm starting to reuse functions from previous effects?
However, they show, that it's possible to combine functions in different ways.

- Animated sprite for the lightning
- Flare to light up the impact position
- Energy flashes at the impact position as in the light-beam effect
- dust coming out of the ground
- burst away stones

Re: Light-beam - 12/31/06 22:25

There are sometimes these demo contests, where people write themself a impressive demo with a lot of effects and regie and music and things you never have seen before. I don´t know right now a link to such a demo source site. Anyway there you can find a lot of exterestical effect ideas. I wanted to do an effect like the first/second effect, this flickering light. I saw that in one of these render demos. Hadn´t yet the time to do it.

Anyway how about a fantastic explosion like in Zelda 3 boss defeat, Axelay or Super Probotector. I thought about the explosions there and came to the point that a mix of extreme fast moving and very short living explosions (models or sprites) followed by a "long" (1sec or maybe longer) burning flames (particles) would make a good explosion. Mixed up with flying around splinters/pieces.

Anyway fantastic effects. We all should use more camera shakes. That´s rocking cool and "unterstreicht" the soundeffects. And I can confirm the bug with the ice.

The shining ring of the light beam and the window shines are too fine. They look too hairy and should be more steamy/turbulenced and softer I think.

I haven´t checked yet the scripts but I hope they are frame rate independend.

Re: Light-beam - 01/01/07 09:38

Yes I knew that bug, now I fixed it.

The Zelda 3 Boss defeat explosions are really great ( über cool ). They use animated sprites, I'll have to watch it again.
A explosion would be nice, right.

Here's the YouTube Video for the effects.

I noticed, that the particles from the light beam are faster with lower framerate, strange since I don't change their velocity.
As well as the stones need different time until they go back into the earth, there seem to be differences between - WAITT (24) - and - 24 times WAITT (1) - ...

Re: Light-beam - 01/01/07 17:27

I watched the video, looks really good. I especially liked the effect with the stone spikes coming out of the ground.

Re: Light-beam - 01/03/07 23:56

Man these are some really beautiful effects. Like the lightning, the the powerblasty thing and the rockspikes shooting out of the ground...actually I like all of them. Anyway, just wanted to say they look incedibly PRO

Re: Light-beam - 01/04/07 18:01

i think ill just add my voice of aproval to the rest as the baboon said definately pro! it just goes to show what you can actualy do with gamestudio if you try... realy hard!

ShoreVietam if only I could show you our prototype videos of some awesome particle fx we have got, and how much your willow wisp has helped we got something a little like this:

YOU ROCK DUDE!

Re: Light-beam - 01/17/07 16:07

You're welcome, I'd like to see those vids when they're finished.

I think you can achieve nice results only with some texture variation.
