WED/MED Tutorial Contest!

Posted By: jcl

WED/MED Tutorial Contest! - 01/04/10 12:28

Our WED and MED tutorials are sort of outdated, as they were written with A6. The WED tutorial is also overly complicated as it covers unnecessary details.

Therefore we're offering two user contests, for a WED and a MED tutorial. The WED tutorial should cover creating and lighting a small level (including a sky and applying a shader), the MED tutorial should cover creating a terrain and a simple bones animated actor. Both tutorials need not be longer than a few pages, and should be in HTML format using the same stylesheet as our online manual. They should be based on the current 7.82 public beta.

The reward for the best WED or MED tutorial is a free A7 Pro upgrade.

Too bad that I suck at WED and MED. But I'll give it a try. I'm in.

Re: WED/MED Tutorial Contest! - 01/04/10 12:59

which sky do you mean? skycube or skydome?
Posted By: Rei_Ayanami

Re: WED/MED Tutorial Contest! - 01/04/10 13:06

I think both, so that the user can decide later laugh

Re: WED/MED Tutorial Contest! - 01/04/10 13:07

English is fine, and a sky cube is sufficient. Just the stuff needed for a basic level.

Re: WED/MED Tutorial Contest! - 01/04/10 16:49

what about the deadline? i want to give this a try but exam weeks are approaching.
Posted By: jcl

Re: WED/MED Tutorial Contest! - 01/05/10 10:36

There is no fixed deadline. We just check the contributions, and as soon as one is good enough for a new tutorial, it will be declared the winner. But there is at least time until February 1st - we won't declare a winner until then.

The quality should be comparable to George's lite-C tutorials.

Re: WED/MED Tutorial Contest! - 01/05/10 10:37

good enough, i'll give it a try for sure then.
thanks.

Re: WED/MED Tutorial Contest! - 01/06/10 13:44

How can i do the same stylesheet like the manual i can only do html ):

Re: WED/MED Tutorial Contest! - 01/07/10 17:15

I have nice experience with both WED and MED, but I only have A6, which kind of defeats the point of this endeavor. frown

Re: WED/MED Tutorial Contest! - 01/07/10 17:18

you download a7 free, you get both med and wed, usage is same in all editions?

Re: WED/MED Tutorial Contest! - 02/02/10 18:26

Hello JCL, i hope it is no too late for this. Did you already pick the winners?

I am working on a MED tutorial, i was planning it to finish today but because of some other unrelated matters i could not worked on it as much as i planned today, i am planning to finish it tomorrow.

I am still going to finish it even if it is too late.

Re: WED/MED Tutorial Contest! - 02/03/10 08:20

Some answers:

- Can only do HTML, no stylesheets: I suppose your HTML editor is from 1990 then. Time to get a newer one. The stylesheet css.css can be downloaded from the online manual.

- Have only A6: No excuse, as the free A7 version contains all editors.

- Is it too late: No, we have no winner yet, not even any complete entries. So there's still plenty time.

About this contest,

Is it still a good idea to keep up with A7 version of the tutorials?

here is an updated link:
http://cid-7eaaaecff478ea90.skydrive.live.com/browse.aspx/.Public?uc=1

please enjoy! - it does cover SED and GED too.

regards,
Michael

edit: it is a A7 tutorial.

Re: WED/MED Tutorial Contest! - 03/29/10 17:33

Thanks for the link. An A7 based tutorial is fine. The A8 editors look a little different, but the basic functions are identical. So the A7 editor tutorial is 95% usable for A8.

Will the winners upgrade to professional license carry over to the A8 edition when out?

Re: WED/MED Tutorial Contest! - 04/26/10 00:01

Hiya.

Nice, clean and simple. Only one little glitch I found; on the second page where you talk about normal maps and shader applying. It's not "mtIFC.c", nor is it "mtIFX.c"; its "mtlFX.c" (thats a small "L" between t and F). laugh

PS: Suggestion; don't just have the 'document' in the latest propriatary .docx format. If I were you, I'd also include the option for .rtx (Richtext) and .odt (Openoffic.org) formats. That way all the bases are covered.

Re: WED/MED Tutorial Contest! - 04/26/10 02:35

Hello, thank you for your input! I have corrected the typing errors that you specified and I have also provided an alternative copy of the printer-friendly tutorial in rich text format.

I apologize for any inconveniences this may have caused.

Thank you,
Dveyee

Re: WED/MED Tutorial Contest! - 04/27/10 06:56

Some more feedback: It's basically fine, but the second part could be a little more extensive. Creation of the courtyard with different textures and remove of the upper block should be described in more detail. Also give a screenshot of the courtyard in the engine, with proper shadows from the sun. Show how to set the sun angle and overall lighting in Map Properties. The sky looks not good, use a sky cube and show the users to check "Sky Cube" in Preferences for getting a correct sky image in the 3D view. For the light in the house, add some object, like a table, for testing the shadows. Last but not least, show an image of the bump mapping in the engine so that the users can see if they made it right.

Apart from that, the tutorial fulfills the requirements. With some little improvements it can very well win the contest!
