To the Gamestudio users - 10/21/11 18:18

Hey hey,

I just talked with Sid about how many active users this forum has, so I had the idea to make this thread. I am really curious about it wink

If you use Gamestudio at the moment, submit your vote on the poll!
(I am counting the votes, to see the result)

Thanks laugh

a good idea laugh

i dont use gs currently.
my study consumes all my time. and if i get some free minutes, i would spend it in my 2 projects (nothing 3dgs-related)

Re: To the Gamestudio users - 10/21/11 19:08

Maybe, it is even more interesting to see how much people still visit the forums regularly, but do not use 3dgs at the moment/generally.

yes, that would have been even more interesting.

I do use it currently.

Re: To the Gamestudio users - 10/21/11 21:46

Seeing how often they use it and which version they're using would be good results.

Re: To the Gamestudio users - 10/21/11 21:47

From my experience less people submit a vote when there are more choices+more questions.

Sorry about that smirk

more than i thought already. laugh

to me the vibe here is quite bleak recently. jcl openly admitting the horrible code in the physx implementation, the very low forum activity, dejobaan leaving for unity, no signs of any serious development to make gamestudio fit for the future (with that i mainly mean support for other platforms),...

Re: To the Gamestudio users - 10/24/11 17:04

Okay, before everyone starts to believe that Gamestudio has only 38 people that use it, lets get this clear:
Not everyone looks into the Morbius Forum. When I created my games with Gamestudio, I never gave Morbius any attention at all. It started when I had no other real place where I could hang around asking questions about Lite-C and stuff and from what I'm seeing here thats kinda normal. The guys who just visit the Gamestudio forum for the sake of the community hang around here, while the hard battle with Gamestudio and Lite-C is fought way above use.
The second thing is: There is a great community in Turkey and in some other country that I can't remember anymore (China?!), usually people from there that use Gamestudio don't take the time to visit us here and vice versa. So these people also won't appear in this poll.

Anyway, the number is way too low and I really hope that it changes with A9, but please, don't fill this place up with assholes again. Noobs okay, no assholes. Kthxbye.

Re: To the Gamestudio users - 10/24/11 17:09

True words, I started reading this section years after I started using Gamestudio. Morbius is more or less a fun topic that not everybody is interested in reading. The only real numbers of how many people use GS will have the sales team of the OPGroup and it is identified by the number of licenses sold for A8 as well as the number of support requests and published titles. This would be an interesting figure to know but I bet we'll never get to know it.

Anyway, interesting poll! I hope the result on "How many users read Morbius and are willing to respond to such a poll" will get better wink

LOL. That's a better way of putting it.

Though the Who's Online figure will always give a good indication

HAHAHA.. GS is dying - that's for shure.
Next gen developers use compiler for multiple platforms.
GS is far far FAR FAAAR away from this...

...but GS is cheap and nice for windows(r) bases prototyping - too bad its proprietary.

Re: To the Gamestudio users - 10/25/11 09:28

I dont use GS to make games anymore, I switched to Unity about a year ago.
I do still use GS however to draw quick 2D stuff when calculating maths etc.

Technically that still makes me a user, just not a very active one tongue
oh, and I like to read the forums ofcourse.

regards,

PS: I did not vote because of the above reason wink

Are you sure? From what I'm seeing it seems to be the opposite, it looks like the Lite-C compiler is currently getting a major rewrite (if not a complete one), that will most likely enable it to at least generate ARMv7 code.

Re: To the Gamestudio users - 10/25/11 13:29

I'm really unsure at the moment. On the one hand I like the workflow of creating Gamestudio games, I love Lite-C (and hate hate hate Javascript -> Unity) but I'm pretty sure that if not A8 brings some significant changes in the tool set it will disappear. Not because it is meant to be used for one single platform! It is because the tool set is so old fashioned and uncomfortable as it could possibly be. When I compare the process of creating a terrain in Unity and Gamestudio it differs nearly 1-2 hours to achieve the same result.

That's bad but all after all I hope so much that one of the next releases is the product we all love laugh

Re: To the Gamestudio users - 10/25/11 14:29

It has been a while since I use 3dgs. Been working on flash games for a while(and enjoyed the "quick-money" I got from it). Actually I love how 3dgs provides anything needed to make 3d games(Sed-Med-Wed-Ged), compared to Unity that only provides the 'Ged'.

Re: To the Gamestudio users - 10/25/11 15:51

The reason I don't really like to use 3D Gamestudio myself is because I don't like the workflow. The tools are not very good and the programming environment is simplified to a fault. I particularly don't like how Gamestudio handles your code. Events, the wait() command, and the your/my pointer seem to be very volatile and cause problems even if you use them the "correct" way. I find this hard to express, but Lite-C seems to promote the idea that you should never know how your code is being executed, and in what order.

On top of all that, over the last several years I've moved very far from being a game designer and that's primarily what Gamestudio is geared toward.

Most of my hobby programming involves what I like to call video game system engineering. I like putting together the guts of my own game engines, like writing the entity handlers, defining the data structures, and designing the major subsystems (collision, networking, rendering). I really enjoy writing in pure C code because its easier to debug than object-oriented code and it suits my method of coding (which is quite low to the ground) really well. laugh

Re: To the Gamestudio users - 10/25/11 17:01

The reason I really like to use 3D Gamestudio myself is because I like the workflow. The tools are irrelevant thanks to free/cheap third-party software, and the programming environment is simplified to near perfection. I particularly like how Gamestudio handles your code. Events, the wait() command, and the your/my pointer are extremely useful, particularly when you learn to use them the "correct" way. Lite-C promotes the idea that your code will always be executed the same way, in a predictable order.

On top of all that, over the last several years I've diversified as a programmer and as a game designer.

A lot of my programming involves what I like to call video game system engineering. I like how Lite-C lets me go as low-level as I want, writing the entity handlers, defining the data structures, and even writing my own major subsystems (collision, rendering [whether through shaders or through DirectX]). Other functionality not already accessible through windows.h are easily made accessible through simple C++ plugins. I really enjoy writing in Lite-C because it suits my method of coding (which is quite low to the ground) really well. laugh

Re: To the Gamestudio users - 10/26/11 15:06

Har dee har har. Nice one. laugh

My own game engines borrow a lot of the structure from Gamestudio. I appreciate many of its aspects. I suppose a good metaphor for what I was trying to get at with my post above is that building a project with Gamestudio is like building a house on a floating island. Many of the factors stay the same whether you're building on the ground or on a floating island, but I think on the ground you have more freedom to do what you want... and my latest projects do tend to go outside the box, internally speaking. wink

Also: Lite-C doesn't give me cross platform compatibility. I'm writing my latest project on Linux (mostly because I hate dealing with the Windows API + DirectX). So there. wink

Details? There's many different kinds of "cross-platform" dev kits.

EDIT: Also don't like the fact that Lite-C uses nonstandard libraries...
Posted By: Rei_Ayanami

Re: To the Gamestudio users - 10/26/11 15:18

As it seems, it will get a compiler rewrite/change (some time ago, jcl stated that the compiler has Chinese comments, which would be the reason for no change..) so that LiteC moves away further from WDL.

He said (translated, he talked in a German thread about it):

LiteC will be available on all platforms, but without some WDL-artifacts like object definitions. For some complex engine objects you will get create functions, simple objects like sounds and bmaps will be as before.
A liteC program will run in Windows like it will run on Android for example.

Re: To the Gamestudio users - 10/26/11 19:54

i wouldn't hold my breath just because something got talked about. for example there is talk about a new WED since 10 years. with what team will conitec do all the necessary stuff for the multi-platform support? where are the fulltime replacements for marco and doug? why doesn't this get communicated better and at least get added to the forecast page?

i think some wishful thinking is going on here.

what forecast are you looking at?

Posted By: ventilator

Re: To the Gamestudio users - 10/26/11 20:11

wed was just an example to point out that some stuff here gets talked about for 10 years. actually i meant the support for other platforms. laugh i edited my above post to make it clearer...

i agree with mercuryus. gamestudio still can be nice for quick experiments and prototyping but for games you plan to release commercially it now simply makes more sense to use something else.
Posted By: ventilator

Re: To the Gamestudio users - 11/04/11 09:40

wow, the new WED made a step from 30% to 35% on the forecast page. if it goes on like that it will be ready in 4 years. laugh
Posted By: WretchedSid

Re: To the Gamestudio users - 11/04/11 10:44

I'd rather wait half a year or more to get a good WED than waiting just two weeks to get a new GED.
Ventilator, you, and everyone else, should know that good software takes time, so lets wait instead of being impatient childs.
Posted By: ventilator

Re: To the Gamestudio users - 11/04/11 11:13

i know that it takes time. i am not impatient, i just think that some people here are a bit unrealistic about what jcl will be able to do without a team that works on gamestudio fulltime.
Posted By: WretchedSid

Re: To the Gamestudio users - 11/04/11 11:21

WED isn't developed by JCL as far as I know but by this russian guy and his son. So yeah, keep hoping and don't forget to light up your candles every evening tongue
Posted By: ventilator

Re: To the Gamestudio users - 11/04/11 11:37

neither jcl, nor wlad and his son work on gamestudio fulltime.

i don't understand what you are suggesting? laugh it would be a nice surprise if a new WED and multi-platform support got released soon(ish) but if you are realistic it's very very unlikely. it's not that there aren't any alternatives to gamestudio though. laugh

Re: To the Gamestudio users - 11/04/11 21:55

This might be slightly off topic, but I thought this was slightly interesting. In an article on 1up.com that talked about Quake's development history, this paragraph caught my eye:

Quote:
Tech changes and trouble plagued Quake's early development. At one point, Carmack set up the engine so that every entity in the game was stored in its own level. Romero explains, "Let's say that we build this whole space out and there's supposed to be a door that moves. Anything that's going to move had to have its own level by itself, lit up correctly, and whatever that lighting is getting put on that object has to look exactly the way it would inside of the [stage it's going into]. There's no way to replicate the lighting correctly from inside...there's no way to say, 'I'm a door sitting in a void with some lights hitting it. There's no way to match that so it looks good inside the other level too, that's just not right."

Romero lobbied Carmack to change the system and he eventually acquiesced.

As we all know, Gamestudio has used this system for level entities since A4.

It seems to me that Gamestudio was always heavily influenced by the Quake engine. Unfortunately since Gamestudio was never developed for any particular game it seems that problems like this were just never corrected when they were being created. I've always felt just like Romero about them, too.

dont be afraid....

if you think about creating Android Games then take just another software.

I for myself dont get'n horny when playing games on an small handydisplay. grin

Its not such a big advantage as it sounds.
Better to stay by the mainbusiness and make games for windows.

We have RenderToTexture with com edition... nice. The holy Unity-cow let you pay for that.

A free ressourcepacker without virusalertion would be a nice thing.

Re: To the Gamestudio users - 11/08/11 18:52

"Unity-cow let you pay for that."
vs
"RenderToTexture with com edition"

lol

However, I just thought about the advantage of more users -> more money for conitec/jcl -> more features etc. wink

(I am an Apple user anyway)

Btw, our GUI has password protected Zip loading for mostly all things in gamestudio beside txt/shaders, but we solved that user our way. [Sounds are not working because of the fact how gamestudio does that...]

(So yeah, a full packer would be nice^^)
