Why is Unity3D the only engine with editors for Mac OS X? Like seriously, give me just this stupid editor I don't even want to run games.

a mac seems like an unconventional game design purchase anyways though doesnt it?

I can't see a reason why a Mac shouldn't be good for game design too?! I mean, its just a fucking operating system, people should get over it and just accept that what they use might not fit the bill for everyone.
Sorry, no offense to you, but some people can't accept the fact that Windows, Linux distro of choice, Mac OS X, BSD flavor of choice or even Solaris, that they are all mature operating systems and some people just don't like Windows and use something else which they can use the best and like the most.

Maybe I am wrong but I suspect it has been a smart marketing strategy

Unity guys could debug their engine "in peace" before entering the arena of windows game engines
MAC people never complained , having no other choice

Remember the days when Unity was still MAC only
In all forum it was given for granted that Unity was the best engine around
I wondered , at the time, how people could make such claim
I dont think there are so many developers having both a PC and a MAC

Beside that its called Mac, Mac users tend to be the most bitchiest people if it comes to software. If Unity3D had any serious bugs or design flaws (be it simple UX things), they had no peace at all.
Trust me, I'm a Mac user and developer myself.

Did anyone download the Cryengine 3 SDK and tested it?
What are your opinios about it?

Hi,

I got it and tested the Forest level, was pretty simple to start but you need to register on Crydev.net to start. Look really nice!

AS always this kind of tools are overwhelming (got the same feeling with UDK and Unity) at first glance. tongue
Did you got any luck make the forest demo as a true game run(not in editor mode)? I wanted to test it in full game mode since I wasted money on a 3D vision set. In general it says you should be able but maybe there are limits with the included assets only?

They mention the idea of supporting Indie if a little team go commercial but there is no general idea of license cost specified at all regarding what you can expect $1000, $10000, $100000? Anyone knows?

I was using the Cryengine 3 sandbox editor for Crysis that Crytek released before this SDK, and I was able to run every level that I did inside Crysis 2. laugh And I can say that it is very good game engine and it has a great editor.

Now, with this SDK, you have to run the Launcher.exe to run the game outside the editor.

If you want it to automatically load the first level of your game, just create an autoexec.cfg file in the the root of the Engine (the same folder the system.cfg is in) and put this inside:

map Forest

Well since it got official today, I might need to be a bit patient. The new wiki and lot of info seems to be just in the startup (and with non functional links). Regarding the launcher, it seems this one is a new kind of breed. One hint I got scanning for any help, it seems you must set up the binaries and folder structure as if you are running your own game not a mod or in edit mode. I presume there will be info on howto do things as fast lot more people have it up and starts to ask questions smile

Just this question how to use the launcher was even raised in the release topic so this is not unique.

@DeepReflection: They made a statement about commercial things:

“For those who want to make the step into commercial gaming, we’ll offer a royalty-only license model for games made with this SDK, where Crytek require only 20% of the developer’s revenues from the commercial launch of their game.”

Oh its not that i think windows is superior in anyway. I just think that its the easiest choice for game design since its till the slightly biggest market, then again its also got the most saturated market so i guess argument could be made there as well.

@XNASorecerer
Well the autoexec.cfg did the trick! However I still got a windowed mode and hum, far less detailed (actually look bad) experience than in the Editor (system.cfg seem to have some importance like enable full screen, but it will not run with that enabled). Do you have a link or something what more options to put in the .cfg files? Can I put in options like fullscreen, 1920,1080 and similar? You don't need to teach me just point where I can read up about it, please?

Think about paying for a license for about 500.000$ wink If you game fails on the market you don't have to worry about too high license costs!

BTW: There was an interesting article in the iX Magazine about game engines. The most attractive licensing model for developers is the "first test it for free and then get an engine flatrate for entire development".

The thing is that hardware is optimized for DirectX & Windows usage. Also, since Microsoft has the biggest market share, they dictate what comes next. OpenGL might not be bad (I know it isn't bad, I've used it more than DX), but still it's only adapting DX features. So every OS which does not rund DX natively will always be 2nd to one that does.

Also, to be a mit more on-topic: the UDK has an extremely steep learning courve. I couldn't wrap my head around it.

having learned basics of both engines(ce3 2009, udk 2011 ), they have pretty much about the same steep learning curve. But somehow i felt more comfortable with UDK.

For commercial, there is no clear information !
So making things just like that, not for me.
At least UT3 engine is clear on the license laugh

no, they are pretty clear about 20% royalty on commercial projects.
