should you keep modeling ? Well if you like it, then yes , if not , then no. Everyone starts with boxes and basic buildings or objects , and move on from there. There's numerous tutorials around you can use to learn , as well as some professional training DVDs which you can buy which are extremely good , the commercial dvds might be a bit on the expensive side (usually over $50) , but if your serious about learning modeling they are well worth the money. Here are some links.

And there's a million others around , you can also find free tutorials around , there's also 3D Buzz , check them out , they have all the Unreal Technology Video Training Modules for free, which teach you pretty much everything for how to make a game for unreal engine , unreal engine 2 i think , awesome stuff. So dont judge your beggining material , everyone has to start from basic to complex , no one starts modeling unreal 3 characters from the get go. Good luck man.

you made the smae mistake i have done countless times, your texture does not tile properly, and you should wrap it more at the moment the blocks are way to big.
try this texture, it is tileable but i have yet to dirty it up.

Oh noooo I appreciate the links but as far as humanoid modeling I will never do that. I really enjoy buildings for some reason

It's a very very very... simple model, this is a default one in 3ds Max 8 I think Besides that, I voted you should keep on modeling because out of this object we can't judge your skills if you know what I mean.
The experiance of modeling will increase when modeling more objects but start small but not too small --> block

Cheers

I recommend you to have a look at Blender (www.blender.org).
I realy like working with it. I started learning with the wikibook "Blender 3D: Noob to Pro" wich wasn´t completed at that time. But it was already great to learn with it. It seems to be much more finished and very well formated. You can find it here: http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Blender_3D:_Noob_to_Pro

You should even take a look at this page: http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Manual/Manual

To use it together with 3DGS it is best to use the .mdl exporter written by ventilator (thanks! ) you can find it here together with a tutorial (written by ventilator as well^^): http://user.schule.at/go/blender/index.html

After I learned the basics of Blender I liked modelling much more then before. It is a great and very powerfull tool.

Oh and you should definatly go on with modelling.

i'm surprised that it's 50 50 as to weather people think you should stop... really i don't see how they can fully judge from just one model.. i b=vote yes... with a bit of practice you could find your skills improving dramatically...

Re: Alley Warehouse - 06/19/07 20:35

Btw , there's a lot of tutorials and the like on making architectural modeling and environmental modeling as well , I posted a humanoid vid cause you said if you wanted to keep modeling , and usually for models people refer to characters in game dev , but I guess if you have to ask other people if you should keep doing it , then you prolly shouldnt , because if you liked it and wanted to do it , you wouldnt be asking people if you should , but trying to learn how you can.

Re: Alley Warehouse - 06/20/07 14:00

Voted YES and not because this model is very good. Just that you don't stop learning. Milkshape has a nice tutorial on how to model a house. Maybe it looks simple, but if you started with modeling in Milkshape (or any other modeling suite). This is one you really need! Use your imagination

I agree. Most people say "i can't draw" when they see me sketching something in school. But the problem is never that you can't draw, the problem is that you might not be looking at references. Even Michaelangelo had reference pics and models, I'm sure. Use reference pictures and tutorials. My first room didn't look any better than your alleyhouse. I don't think anyone's first model looked any better.
