character modeling contest

character modeling contest - 06/02/10 04:55

as of yet there is no prize other than respect , and who knows if enough people enter maybe conitec with throw something in.

you must agree the models that come with gs are way outdated amd we need some fresh meat! cbabe and warlock are great , dont get me wrong but old. so lets say this contest is aimed at charaters.
they can be any type of character , but must be skinned and animated with or without bones , must have at least ,stand ,walk , run ,jump ,swim , death animations but the more the merrier.

lets say 1000 poly min and 3000 max .

and you must be willing to let others use your model free of charge , hopefully all entries will end up on the download page.

all content must be created by the person who enters.

lets say july 4 will be deadline and we can have a poll to vote for best

Re: character modeling contest - 06/02/10 14:01

Ok I will bite... Maybe you can convince Conitec to offer up some cash or free software? Make it worth the time it takes to create a character..

Re: character modeling contest - 06/03/10 02:18

i sent jcl a pm asking just that , but never recieved a reply .
thats why i say that maybe if enough people want to do it , they might.

Re: character modeling contest - 06/04/10 05:18

thats alright , i suck at animation. smile

Re: character modeling contest - 06/04/10 10:38

i found this awesome animation frames pic that i use for the walk and run animations. it helped me a great deal with animating new models with bones. the other basic animations are easy to create.

Re: character modeling contest - 06/08/10 18:37

Nice, I might have a bash at this. It'll give me a chance to try some new stuff out, Thinking of doing a barbarian/warrior guy.

Re: character modeling contest - 06/09/10 03:52

Re: character modeling contest - 06/11/10 19:24

Heres where I'm at, Not finished modeling yet and its already at just under 5000 tris. Is this too many? Should I reduce it down some more?

Posted By: badapple

Re: character modeling contest - 06/12/10 03:21

wow , that looks great! you may have this in the bag. as far as the poly count why dont we just say whatever you make you make
and when the community votes , they can decide if its a mark against you or for you . animations also.

as far as mine goes , i made jason , but i dont think he makes a very good character , all though the model looks good to me , it just doesnt seem like character material. so i ll try something else. but jason is available free in the horror section of my free models page if anyone wants it.

again barbarian looks awesome

Re: character modeling contest - 06/12/10 10:52

there is no need to reduce it.
Posted By: ryangregory

Re: character modeling contest - 06/12/10 14:10

Thanks alot guys, Im glad you like it. I'll not bother reducing it that much then and just see how it ends up.
Good Luck with your models.
Cheers.

Nice to see someone else joining in tD_Datura_v, keep 'experimenting' and youll eventually get better.
Anyways here's where I'm at, still work to be done on the texture and the animations to finish off.

jason can be downloaded from my site , but even though im submitting jason im going to vote for you ryan! that barbarian is very cool and its clear you put a great deal of work into it.

Thanks Badapple! I appreciate it.
Sorry to hear about your wife, hope she gets better soon.

cool model! and the animation looks very natural

Re: character modeling contest - 07/15/10 16:05

Thanks alot, the walk and run animations are actually free motion capture files. My animation skills arent quite up to it.
Posted By: Blink

Re: character modeling contest - 07/15/10 21:06

wow, nice model and animations, i dont know if I can compete with this, lol. Badapple's Jason model is waaay better than my rock monster! wow, maybe we should stop the contest while i still have my dignity, lol.
Posted By: ryangregory

Re: character modeling contest - 07/16/10 13:01

lol, i admire your honesty Blink. At the end of the day though its not really about competing with each other but more about challenging yourself to make a decent model. Id still like to see where your at if you decide to keep going though.

Re: character modeling contest - 07/17/10 02:05

i agree , lets see the rock monster blink

Re: character modeling contest - 07/17/10 03:34

i wanted to make a bit more rocky and chunkier, but after i added bones and animated it, it was cool as is. i didnt really finish its stand animation yet, because i wanted it to be crumbled up like rocks, and when he dies, he falls apart like a rock crumbling.
Posted By: badapple

Re: character modeling contest - 07/17/10 04:09

@blink the crumbleing idea is genius , and i think you did a great job .

i think ryan you and i are the only ones with entries so if you have no objections blink , i say we declare ryan the contest winner. what do you think?
Posted By: Blink

Re: character modeling contest - 07/17/10 12:01

I agree, but your model is equally brilliant! i wouldnt mind making this a every three months. good for practice.
Posted By: ryangregory

Re: character modeling contest - 07/17/10 13:11

So I win? Yay! laugh . My vote would be for Badapple and your jason model, good work.
Blink your model is pretty good, the anatomy is good and it definately looks like rock, I think your too hard on yourself.
I'd be interested in more of these comps in the future, though I hope more people will be willing to join in.
Posted By: badapple

Re: character modeling contest - 07/18/10 02:40

CONGRAGULATIONS ! ryan the only other to contestents i know of blink and myself feel that a vote is not even needed! your character "barbarian" is excellent and wins hands down. great job! and thank you for making this model available for free.
Posted By: ryangregory

Re: character modeling contest - 07/18/10 13:24

Thanks alot guys! Im glad you liked it. laugh
Should I make a post in the user resources section putting the model in there?
Posted By: Pappenheimer

Re: character modeling contest - 07/18/10 13:53

I think that it is a good idea to present each model in the resources section, each with a short youtube video of the animations.
It would be a pity, if the community didn't even notice these generous contributions.

----
Just a note to your fbx file and mdl file. You shouldn't scale and rotate it when exporting it from your application. Do that in MED by Edit --> Globally Transform etc.
At least that is what I experienced when I exported via fbx from Blender.
It is a bit mixed up right now.
Posted By: ryangregory

Re: character modeling contest - 07/18/10 14:27

Thanks Pappenheimer, Yeah the MDL file is a bit messed up, I have no idea whats wrong or how to fix it though.

Re: character modeling contest - 07/19/10 01:27

@Ryan: I appreciate your kind words. oddly, I have a phobia about building humanoid models. I can create cartoony models and static models easily. its something about models that are more humanoid in form, I have this fear of making. I am afraid I wouldnt do it right, lol. so, this is my first model that has an actual "humanoid" shape. maybe a bit more practice will cure me,lol!
Posted By: tD_Datura_v

Re: character modeling contest - 07/19/10 03:08

Phobia or not, the rock monster still beats Johann.

(today's exercise: try to rearrange those words into a working game title)

Oh my ... Isnīt that JCL O.o

Re: character modeling contest - 07/19/10 12:18

Thats funny, lol!!!! The model looks cool enough, tD.
Posted By: ryangregory

Re: character modeling contest - 07/19/10 14:18

Blink - Human models are the hardest thing to model in most peoples opinions, because everyone knows when it doesnt quite look right. The only way to improve is practice, you'll get there in the end laugh.

Re: character modeling contest - 07/19/10 15:29

Thanks, I am getting more confident. I think my issue is the clothing. I do anatomy fine, but the clothing seems like it might be difficult.

Re: character modeling contest - 08/29/10 20:04

I'd have done it but I just dont have the time to do free work anymore.
